Soldier at Fort Leonard Wood broke into commander's home
PTSD blamed, no charges filed

WAYNESVILLE, Mo. -- A military service member stationed at Fort Leonard Wood was hospitalized on Monday after breaking into the off-post home of his commanding officer. Pulaski County Sheriff J.B. King says the burglar suffers from posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and contemplated suicide.
A neighbor of the commanding officer called the sheriff’s department about 3:45 p.m. Monday to report the burglary at the home on Rhyme Lane off Missouri 17 north of Waynesville. Deputies found the burglar had broken a window to get inside.
Three deputies surrounded the home, and as they were getting ready to go in, the suspect, a 45-year-old man, came out and surrendered. King tells KY3 that the service member told deputies that he broke into the home because it was the only place he felt safe. The commanding officer declined to press charges and an ambulance and members of his unit took the soldier to the hospital at Fort Wood.
Fort Leonard Wood mental health officials say in their population, 12 to 13-percent of soldiers suffer with PTSD symptoms.
The commanding officer is not going to press charges. Fort Leonard Wood behavioral health experts say they keep a close eye on PTSD cases, and it is often treatable.
Soldiers with the disorder can be re-deployed as long as that deployment would not be a detriment to the soldier.
As for Pulaski County, the sheriff estimates his department sees cases about twice a month where PTSD comes up, mostly they are domestic disturbance calls.
