KABUL, Afghanistan (Nov. 4, 2011) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network leader and detained one suspected insurgent during an operation in Zarghun Shahr district, Paktika province, yesterday.

The leader operated an insurgent fighter cell in Zarghun Shahr district and was responsible for numerous attacks against Afghan forces in western Paktika.

The security force seized two AK-47 assault rifles during the operation.

South


In Nawah-ye Barakzai district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader yesterday. The leader operates a roadside bomb and insurgent fighter cell, distributes equipment and weapons for attacks throughout the region.

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache during an operation in Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, yesterday. The cache consisted of six 82 mm mortars, which were seized and destroyed on site. No casualties or damages were reported as a result of the operation.

During a routine security operation in Kajaki district, Helmand province, a coalition security force observed two insurgents emplacing an improvised explosive device yesterday. Assessing an imminent threat, the force requested close air support to engage the insurgent position, destroying the IED and damaging a nearby building. No civilians were harmed during the operation according to reports.


East


A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a senior Haqqani official and detained two additional suspected insurgents during in Qarghah'i district, Laghman province, yesterday. The official has ties to both the Haqqani network and al Qaida and directly supports insurgent activity in Kabul province.

In Mohmand Darah district, Nangarhar province, a coalition security force discovered 300 gallons (1,136 liters) of ammonium nitrate in an abandoned semitrailer near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border yesterday. Upon further inspection of the vehicle, and review of the shipping documents found inside, the security force confirmed the truck's
contents did not match the documentation. As a result, the security force coordinated with Afghan National Security Forces, who confiscated the vehicle and its contents.


West


A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache during a routine operation in Bala Boluk district, Farah province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 11 82 mm mortars, two 40 mm grenades, one 30 mm grenade, and 60 rocket engines for rocket-propelled grenades. All of the items were confiscated and destroyed on site. No casualties or damages to property resulted from the operation.
