KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 18, 2011) — An Afghan National Security Force and International Security Assistance Force patrol killed a senior insurgent leader during an operation in Khak-E Afghan district, Zabul province in an operation that was ongoing throughout the week.
The leader commands approximately 20 to 30 insurgents and is a known lethal aid and improvised explosive device facilitator. He is directly responsible for planning, coordinating and conducting numerous attacks against ANSF and coalition forces throughout Zabul.
The targeted leader was in an ambush position and fired upon ANSF and the coalition patrol during the operation. The patrol returned fire resulting in the death of the insurgent leader.

During an operation to disrupt an insurgent network in Musa Qal’Ah district, Helmand province yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition patrol detained several insurgents.
The operation seized 22 pounds (10 kilograms) of opium, improvised explosive device components, and small arms. The narcotics and weapons were safely destroyed on site.
The insurgents were detained and taken in for processing and further questioning.
In Khas Uruzgan district, Uruzgan province today a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered and seized a weapons cache consisting of 700 7.62 mm rounds, one rifle and several magazines. All the items were recovered for destruction at a later date.

The leader is responsible for supplying lethal aid used in attacks against ANSF and coalition forces. The insurgents were taken for processing and further questioning
Also in Logar province, in Muhammad Aghah district yesterday a combined Afghan and coalition patrol detained two insurgents, including a suspected insurgent leader. The leader is an improvised explosives device facilitator responsible for attacks against ANSF and coalition forces. The insurgents were taken for processing and further questioning.
