KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 16, 2011) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a search in Chak-e Wardak district, Wardak province, yesterday for a Haqqani network leader responsible attacks against Afghan government officials.

At the onset of the operation, the security force called for individuals inside of the compound to exit peacefully. After refusing to exit the building, an individual was observed pointing a weapon through a window toward the security force. Assessing an immediate threat, the force fired at the armed individual. A second individual armed with a rifle appeared and the force fired a second time. Elsewhere at the location, the security force was threatened a third time by a suspected insurgent, and again returned fire killing him.

Once inside the building, it was discovered that two of the three armed individuals were females.

Following the operation, the security force met with village leaders to inform them about the events. Additionally, the force detained two suspected insurgents and confiscated three AK-47 assault rifles, ammunition pouches, and a grenade from the compound.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and one additional suspected insurgent during a security operation in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The leader planned direct attacks against Afghan forces and placed roadside bombs throughout the Baghlan province.

East

In Musa Khel district, Khost province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered and seized a wepons cache consisting of five rifles, three 82 mm rounds, 11 AK-47 magazines, mortar and missile launcher components, multiple ammunition rounds and one truck. During the operation five insurgents were detained by security forces and all the items were safely destroyed.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani network facilitator in Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday. The facilitator distributes weapons, ammunition, rockets and roadside bombs to insurgent fighters in the region to use in attacks against Afghan forces. Bomb making materials and other weapons including rockets and ammunition were confiscated the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The facilitator distributes explosives for use in attacks against Afghan forces. The security force also confiscated two AK-47 assault rifles and other military equipment.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network leader in the Maidan Shahr district, Wardak province, yesterday. The leader coordinated suicide bomb attacks in Kabul.
