KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 10, 2011) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol killed several insurgents during an operation in search of a Haqqani network leader in Gomal district, Paktika province, Monday.
The leader oversees the facilitation of weapons and fighters in the central Paktika province.
An armed insurgent was observed by the security force and, assessing an immediate threat, killed the individual. Later, several armed insurgents engaged the force. The security force returned fire, killing all individuals.
Five AK-47 assault rifles, five rocket-propelled grenade rounds, a recoilless rifle and bomb making material were seized in addition to detaining multiple suspected insurgents.

In Zharay district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol discovered a weapons cache while on patrol. The weapons cache consisted of four containers of homemade explosives, two pressure plates, three 82 mm mortar rounds and two anti-personnel mines. The weapons were safely destroyed by the security force.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol seized a small weapons and explosives cache during an operation in Shinkai district, Zabul province, yesterday.
The operation seized 33 pounds (15 kilograms) of refined ammonium nitrate, two rocket propelled grenades, two improvised explosive device detonators, three anti-personnel mines, five artillery rounds and a quantity of communication devices. The explosives and weapons were safely destroyed on site.
In Sangin district, Helmand province yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol seized a narcotics cache during an operation. The operation seized 318 gallons (1,400 liters) of narcotics cutting agent, 100 barrels and 30 bags of precursor chemical. The drugs were safely destroyed on site.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol detained an insurgent leader and two other insurgents during an operation in Qarah Bagh district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The insurgent leader is responsible for numerous complex and improvised explosive device attacks against ANSF and coalition forces. ANSF seized a quantity of small arms and a quantity of communication devices during the operation. The detainees were taken for processing and further questioning.
