KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 2, 2011) — In the Maidan Shahr district, Wardak province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force killed multiple insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator.
The facilitator leads and participates in attacks against Afghan forces.
The security force was fired upon by several armed individuals barricaded inside a building. Responding to the immediate threat, the security force returned fire, killing the insurgents.
The compound the insurgents were firing from sustained considerable damage during the engagement.

South
In Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader and one suspected during a security operation. The leader prepares homemade explosives for attacks in Kandahar City. He is responsible for conducting multiple roadside bomb attacks, acquiring funds and ammunition for other insurgent leaders and facilitating attacks targeting Afghan forces. The security force also seized 10 pounds (4.5 kilograms) of heroin during the operation.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during an operation in search of a Taliban facilitator In the Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province. The facilitator coordinates with other Taliban leaders to plan attacks using homemade explosives throughout the region.
East
A coalition security force discovered an extensive weapons cache in Sherzad district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The security force also detained a few suspected insurgents during the operation. The cache consisted of multiple rifles, pistols, grenades, ammunition, improvised explosive device materials, a mine, 8 pounds (4 kilograms) of Opium and various military clothing items. The items were confiscated for safe destruction at a later date
In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Haqqani network leader and several suspected insurgents during a security operation. The network leader was involved in the coordination and facilitation of mines, mortars, rocket-propelled grenades and roadside bomb materials in the region. Multiple weapons, including AK-47 assault rifles and grenades, were seized by the security force.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Charkh district, Logar province. The leader coordinates attacks against Afghan forces and facilitates the distribution of roadside bombs and mortar rounds throughout the region.
