KABUL, Afghanistan (Oct. 1, 2011) — A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader and killed multiple insurgents in Maiwand district, Kandahar province.

The leader operated in the Panjwa’i district and travelled frequently to Kandahar City. He was in charge of a large group of fighters and purchased multiple weapons each month for use in attacks throughout the region.

The security force encountered several armed insurgents during the operation, assessing an immediate threat, the security force engaged the individuals, killing seven.

The security force detained several suspected insurgents, and confiscated 20 pounds (9 kilograms) of opium and multiple weapons during the operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Now Zad district, Helmand province. The leader is responsible for multiple roadside bomb attacks, acquiring funds and ammunition for other insurgent leaders and facilitating attacks against Afghan forces. The security forces detained multiple suspected insurgents during the operation.

In Kajaki district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader. The leader facilitates narcotics, as well as, funding for insurgent activity in the Helmand and Kandahar provinces. Additionally, he constructs roadside bombs for use in attacks throughout the region. The security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during the operation.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents during a security operation in search of a Haqqani network leader in Musa Khel district, Khost province.

The network leader facilitates weapons, as well as, coordinates attacks against Afghan forces along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border between Khost and Paktiya provinces.

The insurgents were killed after firing a rocket-propelled grenade at the security force during the operation. One suspected insurgent was detained and multiple weapons were confiscated to include rocket-propelled grenade launchers, and grenades, a recoilless rifle, ammunition and roadside bomb making materials.

In Nerkh district, Wardak province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a suspected insurgent during an operation in search of a Taliban leader. The leader coordinates attacks against the local populace and Afghan forces in the region.

Lastly, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Qarghah’i district, Laghman province. The leader is responsible for murder, kidnapping and the manufacturing and facilitation of roadside bombs used in attacks against Afghan forces.
