KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 28, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed numerous insurgents during a security operation in search of a senior Taliban facilitator in Achin district, Nangarhar province, Tuesday.

The senior leader is responsible for orchestrating multiple direct fire, roadside and suicide bomb attacks against Afghan forces.
During the operation, the security force observed multiple insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenade launchers and AK-47 assault rifles maneuvering to attack. The security force engaged the threat, killing the insurgents.
Numerous additional suspected insurgents were also detained by the security force during the operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security forces discovered two drug caches, during two different security operations, in Zharay district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The caches resulted in a total of 308 pounds (140 kgs) of cannabis, 88 pounds (40 kgs) of poppy seeds and 506 pounds (230 kgs) of hashish. The security force seized the drugs for safe disposal at a later date.
In Zharay district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force discovered a weapons cache while on a security patrol yesterday. The cache consisted of one improvised explosive device, 132 pounds (60 kgs) of homemade explosives, two rifles and two 82 mm rounds. The cache was safely destroyed by the security force.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force patrol detained an insurgent leader during an operation in Qal’Ah district, Helmand province, yesterday. The insurgent leader is a known improvised explosives device facilitator and supplier, weapons supplier and suicide bomb coordinator. He is directly responsible for organizing attacks against Afghan and coalition forces throughout Helmand. The detainee was taken for processing and further questioning.
In Now Zad district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents and seized 50 pounds (22 kgs) of black tar heroin while conducting a security operation in search of a Taliban facilitator yesterday. The facilitator provides reports to Taliban leadership based in Pakistan following organized attacks against Afghan forces.
A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents and seized weapons while conducting a security operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Now Zad district, Helmand province, yesterday. The facilitator provides reports to Taliban leadership based in Pakistan following organized attacks against Afghan forces.

Multiple weapons, including a 40 mm grenade launcher and grenades were seized by the security force for safe destruction at a later date.

East

In Ghaziabad district, Kunar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache consisting of 14 AK-47 rifles, 50 fuses, five radios and 42 shotguns. All the items were seized by security forces.
Lastly, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple insurgents while conducting a security operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Pul-e Alam district, Logar province, yesterday. The facilitator is responsible for vehicle born improvised explosive device attacks in the region.
