KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 26, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents and confiscated multiple weapons during an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Nurgal district, Kunar province.

The leader plans attacks against Afghan forces in Nurgal and Khas Kunar districts.
The security force observed armed insurgents running from a building during the search. After assessing the threat and ensuring no women or children were in the area, the security force fired, killing two insurgents. During the operation the security force confiscated and destroyed an 82mm recoilless rifle, three 82mm mortars, 15 rocket-propelled grenades, 12 rocket-propelled grenade motors, roadside and pressure plate bomb making materials, and ammunition.

Also confiscated were several Afghan police uniforms, handcuffs and batons, as well as, multiple U.S. military uniforms. Multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in search of a Taliban leader in Faizabad district, Jowzjan province. The leader is responsible for acquiring weapons and roadside bomb components, as well as, facilitating suicide bombers, setting up bomb factories and coordinating ambushes targeting Afghan forces.
Multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation. During the search, the security force also confiscated a roadside bomb and a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with multiple rockets.

South

In Kandahar district, Kandahar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache. The cache, discovered during a security operation, consisted of two AK-47 rifles, four pistols, three hand grenades, several 7.62 mm and 9 mm rounds and IEDs making materials. All the items were seized by security forces.

In Maiwand district, Kandahar province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered and seized a drug cache consisting of 101 pounds (46 kilograms) of opium.

Also in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in search of a Taliban facilitator. The facilitator coordinates the movement of explosives, weapons, and fighters. Additionally, he provides reports to senior Taliban leaders following insurgent attacks against Afghan forces in the region. The security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during the operation.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache in Wali Mohammad-e Shahid district, Ghazni province yesterday. The weapons cache consisted of four grenades, one rocket, three rocket engines and ammunition. All the items were safely destroyed by security forces.

A Haqqani network leader was captured by a combined Afghan and coalition security force during a security operation in Sabari district, Khost province. The leader directed a network of insurgent fighters, and was involved in the planning and facilitation of roadside bomb attacks throughout the region. The force also detained one suspected insurgent during the operation.

Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in search of a senior Haqqani network leader in Shwak district, Paktiya province. The network’s senior leader manages insurgent operations in Khost and Paktiya provinces, as well as, organizes the movement of fighters from Pakistan to Afghanistan. During the search, a male rushed toward the security force, assaulted one of its members and attempted to take his weapon. Responding to the immediate threat, the security force engaged the male, killing him. Multiple suspected insurgents were also detained during the operation.
