KABUL, Afghanistan (Sept. 25, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation to disrupt insurgent activity in the Tangi Valley in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province.


The Tangi Valley is used as a safe haven for insurgents transiting to and from Kabul, and allows for the movement and storage of weapons and equipment for use throughout the region. During the operation, the security force was engaged by several armed individuals. Responding to direct fire, the force returned fire, killing four insurgents. Also, 10 suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

Disrupting insurgent safe havens remains a priority for Afghan and coalition forces. This year, more than 40 security operations have been conducted in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province, resulting in 15 insurgent leaders captured, 39 insurgents killed and more than 90 suspected insurgents detained.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during a security operation in Archi district, Kunduz province. The leader conducted roadside bomb attacks against Afghan forces in the region, as well as, planned attacks against Afghan government officials. No civilians were injured during the operation.

South

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, a coalition security force discovered weapons and drugs cache today. The cache consisted of 20 anti-personnel mines, 352 pounds (160 kgs) of alleged drugs, 185 yards (170 meters) of detonation cord and 11 pounds (5 kgs) of homemade explosives. The drugs and weapons were confiscated for safe destruction at a later date.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader during a security operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province. The leader facilitated a group of insurgent fighters and provided reports to senior Taliban members following attacks in Nahr-e Saraj district. Also, multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in search of a Taliban leader in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province. The leader facilitated the movement and distribution of roadside bomb making materials, weapons, and ammunition in Panjwa’i district. The security force detained one suspected insurgent during the operation.

Also in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted a security operation in search of a Taliban leader. The leader travels between Afghanistan and Pakistan to meet with fellow insurgent facilitators, as well as, acquiring funds and weapons to support attacks in the Nahr-e Saraj district. Multiple suspected insurgents were detained during the operation.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force conducted an operation in search of a Taliban leader in Charkh district, Logar province, resulting in the death of three insurgents.

The facilitator constructs roadside bombs and uses them to coordinate roadside bombs attacks against Afghan forces. During the security operation, the force encountered armed individuals, responding to the immediate threat, the force engaged, killing three insurgents. One insurgent was armed with a PKM machine gun, and two with AK-47 assault rifles. The security force confiscated multiple weapons and ammunition during the operation.

Finally, a combined Afghan and coalition security force killed five insurgents during a security operation in search of a Taliban leader in Zurmat district, Paktiya province. The leader facilitates insurgent fighters to conduct ambushes and roadside bomb attacks against Afghan forces. The force was fired upon by several armed insurgents during the operation. After assessing the threat and ensuring no civilians were in the area, the security force called for precision air strikes. As a result, five insurgents were killed. The insurgents were armed with a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and explosive warheads, as well as, AK-47 assault rifles and grenades.
