KABUL, Afghanistan – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed numerous insurgents during a security operation in search of a Haqqani Network leader in Dzadran district, Paktiya province, Monday.

The leader manages insurgent operations in Khost and Paktiya provinces, as well as, organizes the movement of fighters from Pakistan to Afghanistan.

The security force located a hide-out where several insurgents were observed in fighting positions, posturing for an attack against the force. Responding to enemy threats, air support fired upon the area, resulting in the death of numerous insurgents.

A follow-on assessment of the area was conducted after the strike and it was determined that no civilians were harmed during the operation.

Multiple AK-47 assault rifles, Russian PKM machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade launchers and fragmentation grenades were confiscated during the operation.

In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan:

North

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered and seized a weapons cache in Andarab district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The cache, discovered during a security operation, consisted of 24 grenades, four rockets, two rocket propelled grenades and several IED making materials. All the items were safely destroyed by the security force.

In Chimtal district, Balkh province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force killed a Taliban leader and detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation, yesterday. The leader, Mullah Yar Mohammed, was responsible for kidnappings, weapons facilitation and ambushes on Afghan forces. Rocket-propelled grenades and a launcher were also confiscated during the operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents during a security operation in search of a Taliban facilitator in Now Zad district, Zabul province, yesterday. The leader provides reports to Pakistan-based Taliban and serves as a communications conduit for insurgents throughout the region.

In Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition patrol seized a weapons cache consisting of 794 pounds (360 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate aluminum, yesterday. The security force safely destroyed the explosive.

A coalition security force detained multiple insurgents during a security operation in search of a Taliban leader in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday. The leader directly supports Taliban operations by providing tactical guidance to subordinate fighters and reports insurgent activity to senior leadership.

East

In Jalalabad district, Nangarhar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained multiple suspected insurgents in search of a Taliban leader, yesterday. The leader conducts attacks against Afghan forces in the region.

Lastly, a coalition patrol discovered and safely destroyed a weapons cache in Andar district, Ghazni province, today. The cache consisted of 882 pounds (400 kgs) of homemade explosives, two recoilless rifles and several IED making materials.
