BALTIMORE -- City police on Monday confirmed that a police officer who was shot to death outside a nightclub was killed by another officer.A civilian was also killed, and four others were wounded.Officer William Torbit Jr., 33, died in the early Sunday incident, according to the Baltimore City Police Department. The officer was on duty but was in plain clothes.
Torbit was responding to a call for a disturbance at the Select Lounge nightclub on North Paca Street at about 1:15 a.m. Sunday. Torbit first tried to break up a dispute among several women, after which a number of men started attacking Torbit.A source told Miller that Torbit pulled his gun and started firing to fend off the attack. When other officers saw Torbit firing, they opened fire without realizing he was a police officer and thinking they were stopping an unknown gunman.
