KABUL, Afghanistan (Aug. 4, 2011) - Afghan and coalition combined security force detained a Haqqani network leader during a security operation in Sperah district, Khost province, yesterday.

The detained leader was the second-in-charge for Haqqani operations in Paktiya.

As a senior leader, he was responsible for directing more than 250 fighters, including Uzbek foreign fighters, in attacks against the Afghan government and Afghan National Army. Additionally, he has planned and coordinated several attacks on the Sperah District Center.

During the search, the security force conducted interviews with local residents in the district. The targeted leader identified himself to the force, resulting in his detention.

North

In Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, an Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban facilitator and one of his associates during an overnight security operation, yesterday. The detained facilitator transported Taliban fighters and roadside bomb materials between designated locations.

South

An Afghan and coalition combined security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban facilitator in Arghandab district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The facilitator is responsible for the acquisition of roadside bomb materials and weapons.

Also in Kandahar, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban facilitator and several of his associates during a security operation in Arghandab district, yesterday. The facilitator was responsible for roadside bomb attacks against Afghan National Security Forces.

In Nahr-e Saraj, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents yesterday during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader. The leader is responsible for the movement of fighters from Pakistan, placing them under the control of other Taliban leaders in the district.

East

In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network leader yesterday. The leader directs roadside bomb and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district.

In Terayzai district, Khost province, an Afghan and coalition combined security force detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Haqqani network leader, yesterday. The leader coordinates the building and emplacement of roadside bombs in the area.
