Being I decided to start a new build I thought I'd get a thread going to see what others have done and maybe get a few ideas I havent thought of.
This will be a 5.56 build. Already have 2 spikes tactical forged lowers ordered and on the way.
plan so far for one of them is a geisele high speed match trigger, and havent decided between the vltor a5 buttstock kit or the magpul prs yet. I'm not planning on this being a short time period build, most likely several months. It will also be a 20" barrel.

I like to play around on ar15builder.com. That always gives me a few ideas of what I would like to do (never actually built one), plus it gives me a decent idea of what it'll look like and how much $$$ I should budget.

Were you going to make this into 2 builds?

Oh, and they have instructional videos in case anyone was interested in learning how to build an ar-15

I almost got that Spikes lower just because of the cool stamp on it!!!

But I stuck with my DPMS... just in case. Also... stay away from Roggio arms. I had to take my lower back to them 2 times to be rethreaded. They are very affordable and were cool about the whole thing, did the work for free, but Im lucky they are close by . But if you lived far away and had to send it in I bet that would piss you off.

So heres a dilly ..... Im thinking of building another AR with a 16" 7.62X39 barrel. Some people have told me this is lame...what do others of you think about this plan?

My first AR was an ar15a1hb. Got this when I was 17. It had an a1 rear sight with an a2 heavy barrel. Sold it to get money for a car...ya..I know. Once I finally get my SIG P220 in September or sooner( Dont hate Eris...hee hee) I plan to build an AR in 6.8 spc with a gas piston system OR get an AK. Locally I can get a Bushmaster multi cal lower for about 125. I will start with only BUI's. I will have a birdcage flash suppressor(open ended),prolly timmney trigger(later on) and Red dot sight of some sort.

Upper(very sexxy)- www.midwayusa.com/viewProduct/?productNumber=173713 Yes its gas tube...but ya know...

My next rifle with be a straight up Bushmaster ACR, I'll do some customization once I get it mostly different trigger and probably another aimpoint ML3 or an M4.

However, the one after that will more than likely be a POF 416 lower, Magpul MIAD grip, Magpul UBR stock, with a BCM Standard 16" M4 Carbine Upper Receiver Group w/ VLTOR CASV-ELS Handguard, and I have become quite fond of the BCMGunfighter charging handles Mod 4 prefferably, still undecided which 2 stage trigger I'll go with. Aimpoint again red dot again.

Thats still a bit down the road due to how much it's going to run me, but I'm drooling already.

Get it with a .308! 51mm vs 39mm... i know you're a girl, but we all know you can handle it!

Just get an AK if you realy want a 762x39

Ya thats what my friend said but to me the fun part is building it and so far Ive only done AR lowers. So thats why they said it was lame cuz I should just get an AK. But Im kind of liking the 308 idea now. Cuz yessir if I can handle that 20" free floating barrel (no hand guard, so heavy) I can surely handle myself with a 308.

Thanks for the links tho SMR.

So... for anyone who has an opinion on the matter... what would be the best trigger group if I wanted to set up an AR for 600yd+ shooting? The geissele looks sexy, but might not be the best here?

And what is everyone's opinion when it comes to flash hiders and compensators?

And whatever you do... dont be this guy. Sometimes less is more.

From Spikes (discontinued I believe)

Kubala, only opinion I have is that a flash suppressor really isnt necessary unless your taking the rifle into a known war zone....
Zombies dont react to gunfire....only the smell of fresh human brains.
:D

Also I like the 308 idea cuz it will give me a chance to work on an AR10 build. I love learning something new. :)

If your ordering from spikes, hope you have awhile to wait. just read on their forum it could be up to 2 months to ship, lower receivers are on backorder, which they neglect to say anything about :(

Well, that wasnt what I wanted to hear... just got told there are still 4000 lower orders to fill before mine yet... gonna be a long wait.
Wish I would have known when I ordered, would have gone elsewhere since hunting season will be coming soon. :(

well, i started on one lower. decided to cheap out a bit and bought a dpms lower parts kit that I installed.
Id suggest anyone doing a build read up on it first, makes it a whole lot easier

A little update on the build...
spikes lower, dpms trigger group, ATI strikeforce 6 position stock and pistol grip (grip not yet installed due to fitment with sling plate) (commercial), single point sling plate, single point quick release sling, S&W 5.56 upper(temporary for function checks and fit), magpul moe hand guard, 1" see through riser, Leopold 3-9x40 scope. think thats about it. upper will be changed to a 300 blackout when fundage is better (laid off right now).

Didn't want to make a new thread for this question but, how does a Bushmaster AR-15 in .223 with a red dot scope + 30 round mag for $640 sound? It sounds like a good deal to me, but I don't want to dish out the money just yet.

goinloco1
01-20-2012, 11:09 PM
If your talking the one cabelas has its not too bad a deal. The red dot isnt the best tho.
but I would honestly look for something chambered in 5.56 since there is plenty of bulk and surplus ammo available. (yes 223 can be used in 5.56 chambers, but its not advised to go the other way around since blown primers and casings are a known happening due to the higher chamber pressure of 5.56)

That's the one! I don't really care about the sight too much. I just want a good start for a weapon that I can continually upgrade and make mine

DevilDog812
01-22-2012, 02:55 AM
i was just reading some reviews of it and the red dot (though my first upgrade for it will hopefully be an eotech) on the cabela's site, and i think im sold, ill be going there tomorrow.

just one thing i noticed is that in the Q&A section of the reviews, someone asks if it can take 5.56 and cabela's answers "Bushmaster Firearms AR-15 Rifles are able to shoot both 5.56 NATO and .223 Remington" and bushmaster itself says that they will take .223 or 5.56

alright, im back and packing! i went in and looked at the carbon 15 model with the red dot for $640 and it was alright, but the carbon fiber felt more like a plastic toy than a metal workhorse, and an employee suggested the DPMS Oracle which was all metal and chambered in 5.56 but came with no optics, so i went and picked up a Bushnell 1x28 red/green dot scope for $140 and i had a $50 coupon for orders over $500 (the gun) and a $20 coupon for the rest of the stuff i bought, so all in all not a bad shopping trip :D unfortunately, hundreds of other people were buying today too, so we waited 3 hours to finally get the gun and it was too dark to shoot afterwards. i might get out during the week, but ill definitely go shooting this weekend and report in on it ;)

make certain before purchasing. but most manufacturers have gone to a 5.56 chamber due to fear of lawsuits since everyone generalizes ar's as being 5.56. Believe bushmaster took that step a long time ago, its just stores dont know what they are talking about alot of times in their ads.

and im never gonna get my upper... i just bought a ruger security six w/ 4" heavy barrel and adjustable sites in 357 mag. an older remington 870, and a winchester model 94 lever action 30-30 carbine. all in original boxes except the 870.
Kinda had to, they were my uncles.

OMG! ... my dumb ass just spent some money on a trigger.. $129 bucks to be exact, and i'm talking just the trigger, hammer, and their springs. RRA national match 2 stage. Lets put it this way, the gun shop orders all their rra ar15's with them. After dry firing one a couple times I now know why, talk about your finger having sex with the trigger... absolutely smooth and fluid trigger pull without trigger snap at the end. Have to install and go waste some ammo :)
