KABUL, Afghanistan (July 23, 2011) - A combined Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force patrol targeted a Taliban leader during an operation in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday.

Several insurgents were killed during the operation when they presented a threat to the patrol. Numerous others were detained and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

The target is a Taliban leader and lethal aid facilitator in Helmand.

A combined Afghan and coalition patrol detained a suspected Taliban leader and another wanted associate during an operation in Jalrayz district, Wardak province, yesterday.

Several men were detained during the operation and 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of homemade explosive were seized. The suspected Taliban leader is accused of building and emplacing improvised explosive devices in the Jalrez Valley, leading a cell responsible for attacks on Afghan police checkpoints and conducting illegal checkpoints along Highway Two.

Both men identified themselves to the patrol and were arrested by Afghan forces without incident. The detainees were taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

In Qarah Bagh district, Ghazni province, yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition patrol seized a weapons cache during a security operation. Two insurgents were killed during the operation when they opened fire on the patrol. One man was detained.

The patrol sized three AK-47 rifles, one recoilless rifle, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, 12 grenades, eight anti-personnel mines, three RPGs, a quantity of improvised explosive device components, five pressure plates, associated small arms ammunition, 110 pounds (50 kgs) of aluminum filings, 66 pounds (30 kgs) of plastic explosives and 66 pounds (30 kgs) of homemade explosives.

The cache was safely destroyed on site, and the detainee was taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

In Ghazni district, Ghazni province, a combined Afghan and coalition force seized an explosives cache during an operation, yesterday. The patrol seized eight 152 mm high-explosive artillery projectiles and four improvised explosive devices, each packed with 55 pounds (25 kgs) of homemade explosives. The cache was safely destroyed on site.

In Muhammad Aghah district, Logar province a combined Afghan and International coalition patrol seized a weapons cache during an operation, yesterday. The patrol seized three AK-47 rifles, seven pistols, 9,240 rounds of machine gun ammunition, 1,300 pistol rounds and 62 pistol magazines. The cache was safely destroyed on site.
