KABUL, Afghanistan (July 11, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition patrol conducted a search for a Taliban leader during an operation in Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday.

The operation resulted in the discovery of an improvised explosive device factory where several insurgents were killed when they fired on the patrol.

The patrol also seized 16 pressure plate IEDs, eight anti-personnel mines, six grenades wrapped in ball bearings, several rockets, two suicide IED vests packed with explosives and detonators, a large amount of IED components and small arms ammunition. The target of the search was a Taliban leader and IED facilitator in the Sangin area who supplies lethal aid throughout central and northern Helmand. The explosives were safely destroyed on site.

North

Yesterday, in Kunduz district, Kunduz province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader. The leader plans and conducts attacks against local Afghan government officials and Afghan National Security Forces.

South

An Afghan-led security force killed one armed insurgent and detained several suspected insurgents during a security search in Ghorak district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The security force was in the district searching for a Taliban senior military leader responsible for planning and executing roadside bomb attacks.

While searching the area, the security force encountered one armed insurgent. The insurgent engaged the security force and the force responded to the attack, killing him. He was armed with multiple grenades and an AK-47 rifle. Additionally, several individuals with suspected ties to the Taliban were detained for further questioning.

A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a vehicle prepared for use as a vehicle-born IED at a security checkpoint in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday.

After stopping and searching the vehicle, the patrol discovered more than 1,300 pounds (600 kilograms) of homemade explosives, as well as a cord leading to a 9-volt battery and six homemade detonators hidden in various compartments throughout the vehicle. The vehicle was seized and will be destroyed by an ISAF explosive ordnance disposal team.

In Qalat district, Zabul province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent during an overnight security operation, yesterday. The target of the operation was a Taliban leader responsible for kidnapping and killing Afghan government officials in the province.

During a security operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, an Afghan-led security force detained two suspected insurgents, yesterday. The force was in the area searching for Taliban insurgents responsible for distributing weapons.

Also in Zharay district, an Afghan-led security force conducted a security operation resulting in the detention of one suspected insurgent, yesterday. The security force was in the area searching for a Taliban facilitator responsible for the movement of explosives and personnel.

East

In Mata Khan district, Paktika province, an Afghan-led security force captured a Taliban leader and one associate during an overnight operation, yesterday. The leader was responsible for coordinating and conducting roadside bomb, suicide and ambush attacks.

Finally, in Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Haqqani facilitator and several suspected insurgents during an overnight operation, yesterday. The Haqqani facilitator was responsible for coordinating the transfer of weapons, ammunition and explosive materials.
