KABUL, Afghanistan (July 5, 2011) – A combined Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force operation led to the seizure of a large quantity of explosive in Maiwand district, Kandahar province yesterday.
The operation seized 1,653 pounds (750 kilograms) of homemade explosives, including 20 pressure-plate improvised explosive devices that were ready to be planted and used against Afghan and coalition forces.
The explosives were safely destroyed on site.

In Mizan district, Zabul province, a coalition patrol, killed several insurgents during a security operation, today.
The coalition patrol discovered a group of armed insurgents and, with the assistance of close air support, engaged them, killing several insurgents.
No civilians were injured as result of the operation.
During the operation, several weapons and ammunition were recovered by the coalition patrol.
In Qalat district, Zabul province, a coalition air weapon team killed several insurgents today.
A coalition air asset observed and identified a group of insurgents emplacing an IED under a bridge. An ISAF air weapons team killed all the insurgents, and a command wired IED containing 22 pounds (10 kgs) of homemade explosives was safely destroyed on site.
No civilians were harmed during the operation.

In Andar district, Ghazni province yesterday, a combined Afghan and coalition force discovered and seized an ammunition cache consisting of 50 12.7 mm round and 705 14.5 mm rounds.
The ammunition was safely destroyed on site.
In Muhammad Aghah district, Logar province, a combined Afghan and coalition force operation led to the death of an insurgent leader yesterday.
The insurgent leader, Mullah Katorai, was wanted on a Government of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan warrant for leading and taking part in small arms, rocket-propelled grenade and improvised explosive device attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Musahi district,
Kabul province. Katorai and an accomplice were killed when they attempted to engage the combined force.
