KABUL, Afghanistan (July 2, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents and detained one suspected insurgent during an overnight security operation in Balkh district, Balkh province, yesterday.

The target of the operation was the Taliban district chief operating in the province. He is involved in planning and executing attacks against Afghan security forces and manages recruiting and weapons distribution for the network.

The Afghan-led security force was immediately attacked by armed insurgents when they arrived at the targeted compound. The insurgents, armed with AK-47 rifles, proceeded with their attack until the security force engaged them, killing several.

After the engagement the security force detained one individual with suspected insurgent ties.

North

In Chahar Darah district, Kunduz province, a combined security force killed one insurgent and captured an Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan leader. The leader was directly responsible for coordinating and planning roadside bomb attacks against Afghan security forces. During the operation an engagement ensued after the security force made numerous attempts to apprehend an armed insurgent peacefully. The insurgent was killed as a result of the engagement.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and one associate during a security operation in Qalat district, Zabul province, yesterday.

The Taliban leader directed roadside bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also distributed weapons throughout the district.

During a security operation in Dand district, Kandahar province, a combined security force captured a Taliban facilitator and two associates. The facilitator was responsible for acquiring weapons and conducting direct attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

In Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, an Afghan-led security force captured a Taliban leader and two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader. The leader was responsible for planning and executing attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces in Zharay and Panjwa’i districts.

In Sangin district, Helmand province a security force detained two suspected insurgents.

The force detained the two men while searching for a Taliban facilitator who coordinates movements of materials for insurgents in the area.

A combined security force also detained several suspected insurgents during a security search in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province. The force was in the area searching for a Taliban leader responsible for directing and facilitating roadside bomb attacks and suicide bombers.

East

A coalition security force killed several insurgents during an airstrike in the Qarah Bagh district of Ghazni province, Afghanistan, yesterday. Coalition forces fired upon the insurgents after they were observed implanting roadside bombs along a major highway. Initial reports indicate no civilians were harmed during the operation.

In Paktika province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani leader and two of his associates during a security operation in Sarobi district, yesterday.

The leader conducted reconnaissance operations targeting Afghan and coalition forces, providing information to Haqqani leaders in Pakistan.

An Afghan-led security force in Khost province detained two suspected insurgents during a search for a Haqqani facilitator. The facilitator acquires roadside bomb materials and weapons. He also coordinates movement of these materials to fighters in the area.

A combined security force detained several suspected insurgents, including one man who was disguised in women’s clothing, during a security search for a Taliban leader in Ghazni district, Ghazni province. The leader directs approximately 15 fighters in the district, conducting attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.
