KABUL, Afghanistan (July 1, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents during a security operation in Charkh district, Logar province, yesterday.

The target of the operation was the deputy Taliban appointed governing official in the district. He is responsible for coordinating and conducting attacks against Afghan security forces.

The Afghan-led security force was conducting a call-out at a compound when they were attacked by several armed insurgents from an adjacent building. The force returned fire, killing the insurgents. Initial reports indicate there were no civilian casualties.

Following the engagement, the security force confiscated a rocket-propelled grenade launcher with warheads, heavy machinegun, grenades, an AK-47 rifle, chest racks and several rounds of ammunition off the deceased insurgents. A suspected insurgent from a nearby location was detained for further questioning.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Archi district, Kunduz province, yesterday. The leader is the Taliban appointed governing official for attacks in the district. He leads a roadside bomb and suicide attack network and is directly involved in the planning, coordinating and execution of attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan security forces. The security force found the two individuals while searching a compound associated with the leader. Both men were detained for additional questioning.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed one armed insurgent during a security operation in Now Zad district, Helmand province, yesterday. The force was searching for a leader who is the Taliban appointed governing official for attacks in Washer district. While searching for the leader, the Afghan-led security force encountered one insurgent armed with an AK-47 rifle. An engagement followed and the insurgent was killed.

Also in Helmand, a combined security force detained several individuals with suspected Taliban ties while searching for a Taliban leader in Nawah-ye Barakzai district, yesterday. The leader, who recently returned from Pakistan, is involved with roadside bomb facilitation and attacks in the Gowragi area.

During a separate operation, a combined security force captured a Taliban facilitator and one suspected insurgent in Zharay district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The facilitator was responsible for movements of materials and personnel in Zharay and Panjwa’i districts.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network facilitator and several of his associates during a nighttime security operation in Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday. The facilitator was responsible for organizing attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces. He also transferred ammunition and communications for Haqqani insurgents in the area. He and his associates were identified and captured at a compound in the district. Residents helped the force identify the individuals, resulting in their detention.

Also in Sabari, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured another Haqqani facilitator along with one suspected insurgent yesterday. The facilitator was responsible for coordinating and executing indirect fire attacks against the Afghan National Army.

In Zurmat district, Paktiya province, a combined security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani leader yesterday. The leader conducts, coordinates, and directs roadside bomb and indirect fire attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.

In Alingar district, Laghman province, a combined security force detained one individual during a security operation yesterday targeting a Taliban leader involved in planning and staging attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the area.
