KABUL, Afghanistan (June 25, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition vehicle interdiction operation targeted insurgent smuggling routes in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
Several insurgents were killed during the operation when they attempted to engage the patrol.
The patrol saw a vehicle being loaded with several bags from known narcotics sites. When the patrol attempted to stop the vehicle, several men fled the area, only to return later and attempt to engage the patrol. The patrol returned fire killing several insurgents.
The operation seized 1,874 pounds (850 kilograms) of dry opium, 4,000 7.62 mm rounds and 12 loaded AK-47 magazines.
The narcotics and ammunition were safely destroyed on site.

A combined Afghan and coalition force operation targeted an insurgent leader in Shahid-E Hasas district, Uruzgan province, yesterday. As the patrol searched the area, a number of insurgents occupied elevated firing positions and began engaging the force. An ISAF air weapon team joined the combined force in returning fire, killing several insurgents.
During a search of the area, the combined force found four AK-47 rifles, one machine gun, two grenades, 88 pounds (40 kgs) of ammonium nitrate, several detonators and 20 loaded AK-47 magazines.
The patrol was targeting an insurgent leader who specializes in command and control communications and the manufacture of improvised explosive devices.
One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
The weapons and explosives were safely destroyed on site.
