KABUL, Afghanistan (June 25, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Taliban leader and killed one Afghan during a security operation in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province, yesterday.

The Afghan-led security force searched a compound for the leader when they encountered one individual armed with an AK-47 rifle. The force called for the man to lay down his weapon and he complied.

While in the process of laying down his weapon, another individual ran out of the compound carrying a bulky vest. The force, assessing a suicide vest, engaged the individual, resulting in his death. After the engagement, the security force assessed the vest to be a chest rack with multiple AK-47 magazines.

The force then moved to capture the leader. He was targeted after receiving several intelligence reports he was involved with the Taliban. He was appointed as the commissioner in charge of transportation, logistics and finance for Taliban leaders and fighters within central Helmand.

After interviewing residents, the force detained the leader and one of his associates.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and one of his associates during a nighttime security operation in Chimtal district, Balkh province, yesterday. The leader was responsible for several attacks against Afghan security forces.The Afghan-led security force, following several tips, searched for the leader at a compound in the district. The force was able to identify and detain the insurgent leader and his associate after questioning.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force in Zabul province detained one suspected insurgent during an operation in Qalat district, yesterday. The force was searching for a Taliban facilitator responsible for moving weapons, roadside bomb components and other material through the district.

In Kandahar, a combined security force captured an individual with suspected ties to the Taliban during a security operation in Panjwa’i district, yesterday. The target of the search was a tactical-level Taliban leader who coordinates and executes direct fire and roadside bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Also in Panjwa’i, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and several associates during a security operation yesterday. The leader was responsible for coordinating and conducting roadside bomb attacks in Kandahar and Panjwa’i.

The force located him and several other suspected insurgents at a compound the force targeted after several reports of insurgent activity in the area. While searching, Afghan members of the force interviewed residents who helped identify the leader and his associates.

A coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 75 pressure plates, several 107 mm rockets, rocket-propelled grenades, one anti-personnel mine, 231 pounds (105 kilograms) of homemade explosive and several homemade bomb making components.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents during a security search for a Haqqani network leader in Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday. The leader directs a roadside bomb attack cell and is heavily involved in the facilitation of weapons and explosives. Intelligence tips led the security force to a compound in the district where they identified and detained the individuals with ties to the Haqqani leader.

Also in Sabari, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several individuals with suspected ties to the Haqqani network during a security operation yesterday. The Afghan-led security force was searching for a Haqqani leader responsible for coordinating and conducting attacks against the Afghan National Army.

During a separate security operation in Mata Khan district, Paktika province, a combined security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for another Haqqani leader. The leader is responsible for the acquisition and emplacement of roadside bombs in the district, and is also responsible for attacks targeting Afghan security forces.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed several insurgents and detained two individuals during a security operation in Gardez district, Paktiya province, yesterday. The target of the operation was a Haqqani leader, who maneuvers fighters and weapons from Pakistan.

Upon arriving to begin their search, the Afghan-led security force was engaged by several insurgents armed with machine guns and AK-47 rifles. After receiving continuous enemy fire, the security force responded and killed several individuals. Additionally, the security force detained two suspected Haqqani insurgents. No women or children were harmed during the operation.

In Laghman province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and several suspected insurgents in Dowlat Shah district during a nighttime security operation yesterday. The leader was responsible for several roadside bomb and direct attacks targeting Afghan government officials and Afghan security forces.

The Afghan-led security force searched for the leader at a compound after being notified of insurgent activity by citizens. The force identified the leader and apprehended him. While searching, the force encountered several men wearing chest racks with ammunition, as well as armed with grenades and AK-47s. Without using force, the security force was able to detain the men for further questioning.
