KABUL, Afghanistan (June 24, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition force completed an operation in Daychopan district, Zabul province today leading to several insurgents killed and numerous weapons caches destroyed.

The operation occurred in the heart of Daychopan near Kebay village, a traditional staging area for many of the recent attacks on Afghan and coalition forces stationed in the region, according to a district police official who participated in the operation.

A coalition force advisor said the Afghan-led force was engaged by small arms and mortar fire after entering the vicinity of Kebay village. The combined force responded with precision-guided ordnance aimed at insurgent positions.

Later in the operation, Afghan force team leaders held shuras with village elders to help communicate the purpose of the operation.

In other International Security Assistance Force news throughout Afghanistan:

North

A combined Afghan and coalition force operation seized an explosives cache in Khanabad district, Kunduz province, yesterday.

The cache consisted of 12 anti-personnel mines and 25 pounds (11.2 kilograms) of homemade explosives.

South

An Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache in Kandahar district, Kandahar province today consisting of five 60 mm mortar rounds and one hand grenade.

East

In Maidan Shahr district, Wardak province, a coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache today consisting of five rocket propelled grenades and an unknown amount of detonation cord.

All weapons and explosives have been or will be destroyed by the security forces.
