KABUL, Afghanistan (June 15, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and one of his associates during an overnight security operation in Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, yesterday.

The leader was responsible for coordinating and executing roadside bomb attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Following local intelligence tips, the force located the leader at a district in the compound. The force isolated the compound and commenced their search. While searching the area, the leader identified himself and was detained. Additionally, the force discovered and safely destroyed more than 20 bricks of homemade explosives. No shots were fired during the operation.

North

In Imam Sahib district, Kunduz province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a search for a Taliban facilitator yesterday. The facilitator supports the Kunduz attack network in conducting suicide and roadside bomb attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan National Security Forces.

The Afghan-led security force acted on intelligence reports indicating insurgent activity in the area. They searched a compound and detained the individuals after questioning. Also during the search, they discovered several roadside bomb making materials, including ammonium nitrate, explosive blasting caps, detonation cord and initiators. No shots were fired during the night operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a nighttime security operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The operation was conducted to capture a Taliban leader responsible for planning imminent attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

The Afghan-led security force searched for the leader at a compound, where they discovered several suspects. The force interviewed the individuals and determined they should be detained for further questioning.

In Kajaki district, Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected Taliban insurgents while searching for a Taliban facilitator yesterday. The facilitator coordinates shipments of weapons and narcotics.

The security force searched the facilitator’s suspected compound. While searching, the force interviewed several residents who helped them identify individuals with suspected ties to insurgent activity. The individuals were detained for further questioning. Several landmines were also found and confiscated during the night search.

A combined Afghan and coalition force operating n Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, discovered a drug cache yesterday consisting of 445 pounds (202 kilograms) of marijuana yesterday. The drugs were seized and safely destroyed by the force.

Also in Panjwa’i yesterday, a coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of five 82 mm rounds, three 155 mm casings, two bags of explosive chemicals, 500 7.62 mm rounds, four AK-47 rifle magazines 1,000 9 mm rounds, 3 rocket-propelled grenade rounds, ten propellant tubes and other assorted weapons. The weapons were seized by the force.

East

An Afghan and coalition security force captured several suspected insurgents while searching for two Haqqani network facilitators during separate overnight security operations in Musa Khel and Sabari districts, Khost province, yesterday. The facilitators are responsible for the transfer and emplacement of roadside bombs targeting Afghan and coalition forces, as well as moving supplies and equipment to senior Haqqani leaders in Miram Shah, Pakistan.

During both searches, the Afghan-led security force encountered several individuals who they suspected were Haqqani insurgents. After interviews with residents, the suspected insurgents were detained.

West

A coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache in Bala Boluk district, Farah province, yesterday. The cache consisted of three grenade launchers, three tripods, one mortar tube, three anti-aircraft machine guns, one mortar plunger, two cans of ammunition and 14 5-gallon (20 liter) jugs filled with homemade explosives. The weapons and explosives were seized by the force.
