KABUL, Afghanistan (June 5, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban leader and detained several of his associates during a security operation in Kunduz district, Kunduz province, yesterday.

The targeted leader was part of a significant attack network and commanded 20-25 fighters in Wali Mohammed Ogrtepa village in Kunduz district. He and the Kunduz attack network are directly involved in roadside bomb and suicide attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan National Security Forces.

The Afghan-led security force captured the leader at a compound in the district. The security force isolated the compound and an Afghan member of the force called for all occupants to exit. Once the women and children were secured, the force searched the area and interviewed residents, where they identified the leader. He, along with several of his associates, were detained for further questioning.

The force ensured the safety of all civilians during the night operation and no shots were fired.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Chahar Bolak district, Balkh province, yesterday. The Afghan-led security force was in the district searching for a Taliban leader responsible for planning attacks in the district.

The force searched for the leader at an associated compound and interviewed residents regarding Taliban activity in the area. Based on the interviews, they were able to identify and detain the several suspected insurgents. The night operation was conducted without shots fired and no civilians harmed.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban activity during an overnight security operation in Tarnek wa Jaldak district, Zabul province, yesterday. The Afghan-led force was conducting the security operation to capture a Taliban leader who commands an explosive-device cell in the district.

Based on several intelligence sources, the force searched for the leader at a location in the district. While searching the area, they identified and detained several individuals with suspected ties to the insurgent leader. Also during the search, the force confiscated a warhead from a rocket-propelled grenade. The operation was completed with no shots fired and no civilians were harmed.

In Helmand province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Nad ‘Ali district, yesterday. The leader is responsible for approximately 15 to 20 fighters who conduct direct fire and ambush attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He is also involved with the kidnapping and intimidation of local nationals in the district.

The Afghan-led force detained the two individuals during interviews with residents while searching a compound associated with the leader in the district. After their detention, they were transported with the security force. No shots were fired in the night operation and no civilians were harmed.

Also in southern Afghanistan, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during a nighttime security operation targeting a Taliban leader in Kandahar City, Kandahar province, yesterday. The leader coordinates and conducts attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also coordinates with a prominent facilitator who supplies his network with weapons and fighters.

Two individuals were detained after the force searched the leader’s suspected compound. While searching the area, the force interviewed residents, who helped identify the two suspected insurgents. No women or children were harmed during the operation.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, a coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache during a security operation yesterday. The cache consisted of 50 12.7 mm rounds; two artillery shells rigged with wires; 40 machine-gun rounds; two pressure plates; 44 pounds (20 kilograms) of homemade explosive; one 152 mm artillery shell and mine rigged together; and one 107 mm rocket.

Also in Helmand, a combined Afghan and coalition force patrol conducting a vehicle check point operation in Garm Ser district discovered a weapons cache yesterday. The cache consisted of five hand-held two-way radios, five battery packs, two remote controls, ball bearings, four fuses and five 110-pound (50 kgs) bags of fertilizer. One individual associated with the cache was detained.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several insurgents during a clearing operation in Baraki Barak district, Logar province, yesterday. The Afghan-led security force conducted the operation to disrupt Taliban activity along a key facilitation route for insurgent organizations carrying out attacks in Kabul. There was a security operation in the area recently, but the force returned to the area upon receiving information of further insurgent activity.

The security force cleared several buildings in search of Taliban activity in the area. While conducting the search, Afghan members of the force interviewed residents who helped them identify several individuals with suspected ties to the Taliban. All men were taken into custody for further questioning and possible detention. No shots were fired during the night operation and no civilians were harmed.

In Paktika province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two individuals with suspected ties to the Haqqani network during a security operation in Orgun district, yesterday. The Afghan-led force conducted the nighttime operation to capture a Haqqani facilitator. The targeted facilitator is explosive-device expert who supports insurgent attack cells in Ziruk district.

Following intelligence reports of Haqqani activity in the area, the security force searched a suspected compound for the facilitator. While interviewing residents, the force identified two suspected insurgents who were detained for further questioning. There were no shots fired and no civilians harmed during the night operation.

In Sabari district, Khost province, an Afghan-led security force detained two individuals while searching for a Haqqani leader yesterday. The leader is responsible for coordinating and conducting attacks against the Afghan National Army. There were no shots fired and no civilians harmed during the night operation.

A coalition force patrol detained an individual in procession of multiple weapons and explosive components during a security operation in Sherzad district, Nangarhar province, yesterday. The weapons and explosives consisted of seven mines, 15 hand-grenades, 15 grenades fuses, five explosive detonators, three blasting caps, three 82 mm recoilless rifle rounds and 1,000 feet of detonation cord.
