KABUL, Afghanistan (May 19, 2011) – A combined Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force operation resulted in the seizure of a large amount of narcotics and weapons in Nesh district, Kandahar province yesterday.

The operation secured 386 pounds (175 kilograms) of opium, 22 pounds (10 kgs) of hashish, four rocket-propelled grenades, two AK-47 rifles, six grenades, seven RPG rockets, three 81 mm mortar rounds, one 107 mm rocket, one rifle, two anti-tank grenades, two heavy machine guns and several ammunition associated with the various weapons.

Two men were detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

An Afghan and coalition force operation secured a large amount of explosives in Shamulzai district, Zabul province yesterday.

The operation secured 772 pounds (350 kgs) of ammonium nitrate, several weapons and improvised explosive device components.

The weapons and explosives have been or will be destroyed.

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache in Arghandab district, Kandahar province today. The cache consisted of 13 hand grenades.

In Zharay district of Kandahar province, an Afghan and ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache today.

The cache consisted of one PKM machine gun, three AK-47 rifles, one RPG grenade, six completed improvised explosive devices, one suicide vest, detonation cord and several mortars and shrapnel.

The weapons and explosives have been or will be destroyed.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition force operation discovered a weapons cache in Khugyani district, Ghazni province yesterday.

The cache consisted of 27 rocket-propelled grenades and six grenades.
