KABUL, Afghanistan (May 19, 2011) – An Afghan and International Security Assistance Force detained more than 10 suspected Haqqani Network insurgents during a security operation targeting senior Haqqani leaders in Khost province yesterday.

The Haqqani Network is an insurgent organization operating primarily in the Paktika, Paktiya, and Khost provinces. They conduct high-profile attacks against Afghan government officials, Afghan National Army and coalition forces. Haqqani insurgents are also known to carry out attacks in both, Kabul and Jalalabad.

The combined security force has conducted multiple operations targeting the network in Khost province. During the search, the force secured several compounds and conducted a host of interviews. All together, more than 10 men suspected Haqqani insurgents were detained for further questioning.

Since January, the security force has captured or killed over 30 Haqqani leaders along with several hundred Haqqani operatives.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Taliban leader in Qalat district, Zabul province yesterday.

The leader coordinates attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. After numerous reports of insurgent activity in the area, the combined security force searched for the leader at a compound in the district. The force secured multiple compounds and interviewed local residents about the whereabouts of the insurgent leader. Based on the information provided during the interviews, the force detained one suspected insurgent for further questioning.

No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed during this operation.

In Garm Ser district, Helmand province, a coalition security force discovered a drug cache yesterday.

The cache was discovered after a more thorough and deliberate search of a vehicle confiscated recently by coalition forces. The cache was found after removal of the dash board and the back seat. The force found the cache in hidden compartments throughout the vehicle. The cache consisted of 400 pounds (182 kilograms) of opium, one satellite phone, headphones and numerous phone numbers on a card.

East

In Khugyani district, Nangarhar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a clearance operation yesterday.

The combined force conducted the clearance operation in order to disrupt Taliban activity in the area. This area has historically been associated with multiple Taliban facilitators.

During the operation, the force secured and cleared several buildings. After securing each location the combined force interviewed residents about suspected Taliban activity in the area resulting in the detention of several individuals.

No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed during this operation.

In Darah-ye Pech district, Kunar province, coalition forces killed two insurgents, yesterday.

A coalition helicopter came under fire from insurgents using small-arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades. An air weapons team and close air support responded, killing the two insurgents.
