KABUL, Afghanistan (May 18, 2011) – An Afghan and International Security Assistance Force, killed more than 60 insurgents during clearing operations in Qiasar district, Faryab province in a three-day operation which began Friday.

The combined force cleared the area around Ghuchghar village after receiving reports of insurgent activity. In the ensuing engagements, the combined force reported destroying 23 motorcycles used by insurgents, several rocket propelled grenades, machine guns, numerous assault rifles and accompanying ammunition.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

An ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province today.

The cache consisted of one 155 mm round, three rocket propelled grenades, three 12.7 mm rounds, one grenade and one detonator.

A combined Afghan Security Force and coalition force vehicle interdiction operation resulted in the discovery of a sizeable amount of explosives in central Helmand province yesterday.

The combined force secured 7,165 pounds (3,250 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate and 154 pounds (70 kgs) of wet opium during the operation.

One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

The weapons and narcotics have been or will be destroyed.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a weapons cache in Giro district, Ghazni province today. The cache consisted of two anti-tank mines and three anti-personnel mines.

All munitions were destroyed by security forces.
