KABUL, Afghanistan (May 18, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani Network leader and several of his associates during a clearance operation in Orgun district, Paktika province yesterday.

The combined security force conducted the clearance operation in order to disrupt a known Haqqani safe haven and insurgent facilitation networks in the district. This area is historically associated with several Haqqani leaders.

During the operation, the force secured several buildings. At each location they called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, ensuring the safety of all women and children.

While questioning residents, the force identified and detained a Haqqani leader and several of his associates. The leader was a recruiter for the network, and he coordinated suicide bomb attacks in the district.

South

In Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader yesterday.

The Taliban leader is the military commander in the district, and he has been tasked by senior leaders with coordinating and executing high profile attacks in Panjwa’i and Kandahar City.

Based on multiple reports indicating the whereabouts of the leader, the combined security force targeted two compounds in the district. The force cleared multiple buildings and interviewed residents about insurgent activity in the area. The force detained several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban activity in the area.

Throughout the operation the force was careful to ensure the safety of all civilians.

In Kajaki district, Helmand province, one insurgent was detained while an Afghan and coalition security force searched for a Taliban leader, yesterday.

The Taliban leader plans and implements asymmetrical attacks against Afghan and coalition forces, and is a key facilitator of improvised explosive devices for the Taliban network in the district.

The combined force searched for the leader at a compound in the district. While ensuring the safety of all women and children, the force cleared several buildings and interviewed residents. One suspected insurgent was detained for further questioning.

No shots were fired during the operation and no civilians were harmed.

East

In Baraki Barak district, Logar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a security operation targeting a Taliban leader yesterday.

The Taliban IED cell leader controls an active group that acquires weapons and IED materials. He is also responsible for conducting attacks against Afghan government officials and Afghan and coalition security forces.

Intelligence reports led the combined security force to a location in Baraki Barak district in search of the leader. The force isolated the area and searched the targeted compound.

The force interviewed the residents of the compound, and several individuals suspected of involvement with insurgent activity were detained for further questioning.

No civilians were harmed during the search.

In Sabari district, Khost province, two suspected insurgents were detained by an Afghan and coalition security force during a security operation, yesterday.

The operation targeted a Haqqani facilitator who is responsible for purchasing weapons and IED materials for the insurgent network. He also emplaces IEDs for attacks targeting Afghan and coalition forces.

Intelligence reports of Haqqani activity in the area led the combined security force to a compound in the district. The force secured and cleared the compound without incident. After interviews and questioning two individuals with suspected ties to Haqqani activity were detained.

West

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Murghab district, Badghis province yesterday.

The leader is the Taliban appointed provincial commissioner for Badghis province. He provides fighters to other senior Taliban leaders and commands 10-15 fighters in the Murghab area.

After multiple intelligence reports indicated insurgent activity in the area, the combined security force targeted a compound in the district in search of the leader. The force secured and searched several buildings before detaining two suspected insurgents.

There were no shots fired during this operation and no civilians were harmed.
