KABUL, Afghanistan (May 16, 2011) – A combined Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Force operation resulted in the death of several insurgents in Tagab district, Kapisa province yesterday.

The operation was in response to a call for aid from a checkpoint that was under attack from insurgents.

The combined force arrived at the scene of the attack and immediately came under fire from small arms, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenades and mortars. They returned fire, killing five insurgents.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

A combined Afghan and collation force discovered a weapons cache in Arghandab district, Kandahar province today. The cache consisted of 11 120mm mortar rounds.

All the weapons were confiscated by security forces.

In Zharay district, Kandahar province an Afghan and collation patrol discovered a drug cache, today. After being engaged by a group of insurgents located in a building, the security forces returned fire and the insurgents broke contact. Following the attack the patrol discovered of 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of opium in the building.

The drugs were destroyed by security forces.

West

A combined Afghan National Security Force and ISAF operation resulted in the discovery of a sizeable amount of narcotics in Lash-E Juwain district, Farah province yesterday.

The combined force secured 705 pounds (320 kgs) of opium.

One man was detained during the operation and taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.

The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.
