KABUL, Afghanistan (May 15, 2011) – Three insurgents were killed and three others were detained after they fired on a joint Afghan National Police and International Security Assistance Forces patrol in the Baraki Barak district Logar province, yesterday.

After stopping the attack, Afghan and coalition forces confiscated a weapons cache consisting of two PKM machine guns, two drums of PKM ammunition, a PKM ammunition belt, ICOM radio, four AK-47 rifle magazines, one motorcycle battery, a radio, one tactical vest, two pistols with holsters, three cell phones and one pair of binoculars.

The detainees are in the custody of Afghan National Police.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

A combined Afghan and coalition force discovered a drug and weapons cache in Maiwand district, Kandahar province today. The cache consisted of 121 pounds (55 kgs) of hashish, 88 pounds (40 kgs) of opium, one AK-47 rifle with three magazines and three cell phones.

In Spin Boldak district, Kandahar province, an ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache today consisting of 54 pressure plates.

Coalition forces killed several insurgents in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province yesterday.

The insurgents fired at a coalition forces air weapons team from a known enemy firing position. The air weapons team returned fire, killing them.

In Now Zad district, Helmand province, coalition forces conducting a dismounted patrol killed one insurgent today.

The insurgent engaged the forces with indirect fire. After positively identifying the insurgents firing position, the force returned fire killing him.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol discovered a weapons cache in Dehyak district, Ghazni province, yesterday. The cache consisted of two rocket-propelled grenade launchers, two 62 mm mortar rounds, one pressure plate improvised explosive device, one anti-tank mine and two cell phones.

All weapons have been or will be destroyed by the security forces.
