KABUL, Afghanistan (May 15, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani Network leader during a security operation in Sabari district, Khost province yesterday.

The Haqqani leader was responsible for coordinating weapons and ammunition distribution to insurgents in the district. He also constructed and conducted IED attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

Multiple intelligence reports and tips led the combined security force to the leaders suspected compound in Sabari district. The force was clearing a series of buildings in the area when they noticed an individual attempting to flee the area. The individual was caught and detained a short time later. Once detained, he identified himself as the targeted leader, and was subsequently taken into custody for further questioning.

The force wrapped up their search of the targeted compound by safely destroying multiple AK-47 assault weapons, rifles, and chest racks which they discovered during the operation.

Throughout the search, the force was careful to ensure the safety of all women and children.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Sayyidabad district, Wardak province yesterday.

The Taliban facilitator prepares weapons and equipment for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.

The combined security force searched for the facilitator at a compound in Sayed Abad district based on intelligence reporting. After isolating the compound, the force called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. Once the safety of all women and children was secured, the force commenced their search. The force interviewed local residents about insurgent activity in the area. After conducting the interviews, two suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning.

In Charkh district, Logar province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents during a clearance operation yesterday.

The combined force conducted clearance of a known insurgent safe haven in order to disrupt Taliban activity in the province. The area is historically associated with a senior Taliban leader who directs Taliban and Haqqani operations in the district.

Clearing multiple buildings, the force interviewed local residents about suspected Taliban activity in the area. While searching the location, the force identified two individuals with suspected ties to insurgent activity. The two individuals were detained for further questioning.

During the search the force was careful to ensure the safety of all women and children and no civilians were harmed.
