KABUL, Afghanistan (May 14, 2011) – An Afghan and International Security Assistance Force captured a Taliban leader during a security operation in Shibirghan district, Jowzjan province yesterday.

The Taliban leader conducted attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also facilitated, planned, and coordinated improvised explosive device activity in the province.

The combined security force was alerted to the leader’s location by opportune intelligence tips. They isolated the area and secured the area peacefully without the use of force. The insurgent facilitator was immediately identified and detained after the force searched the compound.

No civilians were harmed during the operation.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Chahar Darah district, Kunduz province, yesterday.

The Taliban leader is the insurgent military commander for Kunduz province and former district commander for Chahar Darah. He works with the Kunduz suicide attack network leader to plan attacks and IED emplacements.

The combined security force searched for the leader at a compound in the district. They secured the compound and conducted interviews with local residents. Two individuals were detained under suspicion of involvement with Taliban activity in the area.
No civilians were harmed during the operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator and one of his associates during a security operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, yesterday.

The senior Taliban facilitator was responsible for supplying IED materials and weapons to over 15 other Taliban insurgents in the district.

After extensive intelligence gathering, the combined security force searched for the facilitator at his suspected compound in Zharay district. The search commenced as the force called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully, allowing them to secure the safety of all women and children. Once all civilians were secured the force searched the compound and interviewed residents. Based on the information provided in the interviews the security force was able to identify and detain the insurgent facilitator.

During the operation the force also discovered and safely destroyed a cache of drugs.
The operation was completed peacefully with no civilians harmed.

East

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani Network facilitator and one of his associates during a security operation in Khost district, Khost province, yesterday.

The Haqqani facilitator was responsible for conducting IED and direct attacks against Afghan National Army and coalition forces.

Based on numerous reports of insurgent activity in the area, the combined security force searched for the facilitator at a compound in the district. The force isolated the targeted compound and called for all occupants to exit peacefully. All of the individuals complied with the request, allowing the force to ensure the safety of all women and children.

While searching the area and conducting interviews with residents, the force identified the insurgent facilitator and detained him. One of his associates was also detained for further questioning.

The operation was conducted peacefully, with no shots fired and no civilians harmed.

In Orgun district, Paktika province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani Network leader during a security operation yesterday.

The Haqqani leader directs sub-commanders and fighters in attacks on Afghan and coalition forces throughout Orgun, Sar Rowzah, Nikeh, and Ziruk districts in Paktika province. Intelligence tips led the security force to a compound with suspected associations with the Haqqani leader. Commencing their search, the force secured the area and called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. After ensuring the safety of all women and children, the force interviewed local residents.

After initial questioning, several suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning.
There were no shots fired and no civilians harmed during the operation.

In the same district and province, a separate combined Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani Network leader yesterday.

The Haqqani leader commands a group of fighters in the district and is directly responsible for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.
The combined security force searched for the leader at a compound in Orgun district after receiving multiple reports of Haqqani activity in the area. After the initial search, the force conducted interviews with several individuals about suspected insurgent activity in the area.

After initial questioning, the force detained the individuals under suspicion of having ties to insurgent activity.

No shots were fired during this operation.
