KABUL, Afghanistan (May 13, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces detained one individual and discovered a sizeable amount of narcotics during a vehicle interdiction operation in Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province yesterday.
The combined force discovered and secured 661 pounds (300 kilograms) of wet opium. The detainee was taken by Afghan authorities for processing and further questioning.
The narcotics were safely destroyed on site.

In Bermal district, Paktika province, coalition forces killed several insurgents today.
After positively identifying a group of insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades, ISAF close air support and an air weapon team engaged the insurgents killing several of them.
In Zanakhan district, Ghazni province, today, a coalition patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of one PK machine gun, one rocket-propelled grenade launcher, seven 73 mm recoilless rifle rounds, two mortar tubes, one AK-47, two mechanisms for improvised explosive devices and several rounds of different caliber.
All weapons were destroyed by security forces.
South
A joint Afghan and coalition forces patrol captured a mid-level Taliban leader in Shahid-e Hasas district, Uruzgan province, yesterday.
The leader was captured by the combined team during a clearing operation in several villages in the Khod valley region, according to coalition forces officials. The man was responsible for training and organizing Taliban forces in the area.
Afghan and coalition forces have conducted a series of operations in the Khod valley aimed at placing pressure on insurgents in the region.
According to reporting, the valley has traditionally been a staging point for Taliban activity in western Uruzgan.
“This is another operation to free the people of Khod valley from insurgent aggression,” said an Afghan commando on the mission. “This is a big step toward peace in our region.”
