KABUL, Afghanistan (May 7, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces detained two insurgents in the Khanabad district, Kunduz province, during a joint operation, today.

Afghan forces received local intelligence on two insurgents and detained them. One insurgent tested positive for explosive residue and is believed to be the suicide bomb facilitator responsible for the July 2010 bombing of the Kunduz City Ariana Hotel. The detainees were taken into custody pending further investigation.

No civilians were injured and no property damage was reported during the operation.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

A combined Afghan and coalition force patrol in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province discovered 500 pounds (227 kilograms) of marijuana and 17 fluid ounces (500 milliliters) of homemade explosives.

In Nad Ali district, Helmand province, today, coalition forces discovered 80 pounds (36 kgs) of black tar and 30 pounds (14 kgs) of crushed Sudafed.

All drugs and explosives have been disposed of.

East

Afghan and coalition forces discovered a weapons cache in Qarghah district, Laghman province, today. The cache consisted of seven grenades, three fuses, two rocket-propelled grenade sights, two rifles, seven chest racks and two Afghan National Police uniforms.

All weapons have been destroyed by security forces.
