KABUL, Afghanistan (May 7, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed one insurgent and detained two while searching for a Taliban leader in Behsud district, Nangarhar province yesterday.

The Taliban leader is an al-Qaida affiliated insurgent operating in Wanat district, Kunar province and Waygal valley, Nuristan province. He is closely associated with a number of Taliban leaders who are currently facilitating al-Qaida foreign fighters in the region.

The combined force targeted a compound in the district based on numerous intelligence sources. While moving into position the force was engaged by one armed suspected insurgent. The suspected insurgent was given many verbal warnings in Pashtu, however he ignored the warnings and raised his weapon toward the security force. The force engaged the suspected insurgent, resulting in his death.

After the engagement, the force continued search procedures by isolating the compound. The force insured the safety of all women and children and continued their search. They searched and cleared the area without any further issues. Afterwards, the force detained two suspected insurgents after questioning residents of the compound.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation in Ghorak district, Kandahar province yesterday.

The Taliban Leader commands and controls insurgent fighters in the district, and he coordinates attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He also operates as an explosive device facilitator, providing subordinate fighters with improvised explosive device materials and guidance for attacks in the province. The leader assists with the movement of munitions and narcotics throughout the region. Intelligence reports of insurgent activity in the area led the combined security force to search the compound in the district. The force isolated the area and called for all occupants to exit the buildings. While conducting the call-out, the force observed three suspected insurgents attempting to flee the area. All three were detained for further questioning.

In Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province a separate combined security force detained three suspected insurgents while searching for an insurgent facilitator during a security operation yesterday.

The facilitator acquires improvised explosive device materials, money, and intelligence for the Kandahar and Zabul Taliban attack networks. Intelligence reports indicate he has direct knowledge of the Sarposa prison break on April 24. Multiple reports of insurgent activity in the area led the combined security force to the facilitators suspected compound in the district. After isolating the area, the force called for all occupants to exit the buildings. The force searched the area and interviewed the compound residents, resulting in three suspected insurgents being detained.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Haqqani network facilitator and two suspected insurgents during a security operation in Sabari district, Khost province yesterday.

The facilitator is responsible for the acquisition, movement and employment of weapons, ammunition, and explosive materials throughout the district.

After extensive intelligence gathering, the force searched for the facilitator at a compound in the district. The force secured and cleared the targeted compound. During the search the force was careful to ensure the safety of all women and children.

Completing the search, the force interviewed local residents about the whereabouts of the Haqqani facilitator. After initial questioning, the force identified and detained the insurgent facilitator. Two of his associates were also detained for further questioning.

In Sabari district, Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained a Haqqani network facilitator during a security operation yesterday.

The facilitator was responsible for the facilitation and coordination of explosive device strikes targeting Afghan and coalition forces. Intelligence reports led the force to target a compound in the district in search of the facilitator. The force commenced the search by isolating the area and calling for all occupants to exit the premises. After securing the safety of all women and children, the force searched several buildings in the compound.

After questioning several residents, the force identified and detained the facilitator.

Several suspected insurgents were detained by a combined Afghan and coalition security force In Baraki Barak district, Logar province yesterday, while searching for a facilitator during a security operation.

The insurgent facilitator is responsible for providing weapons and equipment used for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in Charkh and Baraki Barak districts. Intelligence reports led the combined security force to target a compound in Baraki Barak district. The force secured and cleared the area without firing a shot. They continued their search by interviewing local residents. Four individuals with suspected involvement in insurgent activity were detained for further questioning.

In Chak-e Wardak district, Wardak province a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader yesterday.

The Taliban leader coordinates and conducts attacks and kidnappings against Afghan and coalition forces operating in Sayed Abad district. Based on multiple intelligence sources, the combined security force targeted a compound associated with the Taliban leader. The force isolated the area and called all occupants to exit the buildings. Once all civilians were secured, the force conducted interviews with them about the whereabouts of the insurgent leader. Based on the information provided by the local residents, two suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning.

In Bermal district, Paktika province, Afghan and coalition forces killed several insurgents and discovered a weapons cache during a security operation in Bermal district, Paktika province Thursday.

The combined security force received small-arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire from a group of insurgents. The combined force engaged the insurgents with close air support assets, artillery and small-arms fire killing several insurgents during the operation. The force also discover a weapons cache consisting of one 82 mm mortar system with two aiming circles, three 82 mm mortar rounds, 16 107 mm rocket fuses, one assault pack and two bags filled with unknown white substance.

In Pul-e Alam district, Logar province, Afghan and coalition forces conducting a traffic control check point detained several insurgents and confiscated a large weapons cache yesterday. The cache consisted of 20 rocket-propelled grenades, two RPG launchers, a PKM machine gun, 50 magazines, 16 AK-47s, one anti-aircraft machine gun, 1,000 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition, a mortar bipod, cell phones and Afghan National Army and U.S. Army Combat Uniforms were discovered in the insurgents’ possession. The detainees are in the custody of Afghan National Security Forces.

No civilians were harmed during the operations.
