KABUL, Afghanistan (May 4, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed numerous insurgents and detained one suspected insurgent while conducting a clearing operation in Chaparhar district, Nangarhar province, yesterday.

The operation was conducted to search for a Taliban leader known weapons facilitation and financing attacks. The leader has close associations with the Taliban leader who commands and controls insurgent operations in Nangarhar.

Based on numerous intelligence reports of insurgent activity in the area, the security force targeted a compound in the district. The force isolated the area and called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully.

While attempting to secure the buildings, the force was engaged by armed insurgents. They responded to enemy fire, killing several insurgents. At a nearby wood line, the force was engaged by heavily-armed insurgents. The force returned fire, resulting in several additional insurgents killed.

Once the objective was secured, the force moved to search the targeted compound. After securing the compound, the force questioned residents, and as a result, detained one suspected insurgent.

During the operation, multiple grenades, AK-47 rifles and chest racks were discovered and destroyed. The entire operation was conducted while keeping women and children safe. Initial reports indicate no civilians were harmed.

North

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a senior Taliban leader in Dahanah-ye Ghori district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The leader is the deputy chief, commanding and controlling Taliban operations in Burkah district, Baglhan province.

Multiple reports of explosive device activity in the area led the security force to search for the Taliban leader at a compound in Dahanah-ye Ghori. The force isolated the area and called for all occupants to exit the buildings. Not all occupants acted in accordance with the request and, as a result, the force used non-lethal escalation-of-force measures to get the others to comply. Once all occupants were out of the compound, the force secured the safety of the women and children. They continued the operation, searching buildings and interviewing residents. After questioning, the force detained several suspected insurgents for further questioning. During the search, the force also discovered and destroyed multiple grenades, armor piercing rounds and a chest rack.

There were no shots fired during the operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained more than 10 suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation in Panjwa’i district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The leader is the senior governing official for Taliban attacks in Kandahar. He previously was the Taliban district leader for Arghistan district, and is a member of the Kandahar military shura.

Intelligence reports led the force to search a compound in the district. The force secured and cleared several buildings while searching for the leader. After searching the area and conducting interviews, the force identified and detained more than 10 individuals with suspected links to Taliban insurgency in the area. The force ensured the safety of the women and children throughout the search and no shots were fired during the operation.

East

In Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network leader during a security operation in Sabari district, yesterday. The leader is responsible for the coordination of homemade bomb strikes and the acquisition of homemade bomb materials.

Intelligence tips led the security force to target a compound in search of the leader. The force isolated the area and called for all occupants to exit peacefully. All occupants complied with the request, allowing the force to ensure the safety of the women and children. Afterwards, the force conducted interviews with residents. Based on the information provided by residents, two suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader in Baraki Barak district, Logar province, yesterday. Reports indicate the leader is set to take over as the next chief of a Taliban attack cell based in Uzbek Khail village.

The security force searched for the leader at a compound in the district based on intelligence tips. The force isolated the area and called for all occupants to exit. All occupants complied with the request, allowing the force to ensure the safety of the women and children. Completing the search, the force questioned local residents about the leader’s location. Following the interviews, the force detained several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency for further questioning. During the operation, away from the compound, one male villager received minor injuries on his arm and was treated on-scene by security force medical personnel.
