KABUL, Afghanistan (May 2, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed numerous insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation in Doshi district, Baghlan province, yesterday.
The leader is an insurgent district chief and leads approximately 30 insurgent fighters which he plans to use in large-scale attacks against Afghan and coalition forces and developed and extensive explosive device and suicide vest network for attacks in the district.
Intelligence tips led the security force to search for the leader at a compound in the district. Throughout the mission the force came into contact with multiple armed insurgents. The initial contact occurred when the force was engaged by a group of heavily armed insurgents. The force returned fire, killing several insurgents. Another armed insurgent was killed at a nearby location when he engaged the force with small-arms fire. Initial reports indicate no civilians were harmed during either altercation.
During the search, the force also discovered multiple rocket-propelled grenades, AK-47 rifles, grenades and a machine gun.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator and numerous associates during a security operation in Now Zad district, Helmand province, yesterday. The facilitator coordinates shipments of homemade explosives and homemade bomb components for Taliban cell leaders operating in Now Zad, Musa Qal’ah and Sangin districts.
The security force targeted the facilitator’s suspected compound in the district after numerous reports of insurgent activity in the area. The operation began as the force secured the area and called for all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. The force commenced their search after securing the safety of the women and children. During the search, the force discovered 330 pounds (150 kilograms) of morphine base and 30 pounds (14 kgs) of black tar heroin. Afterwards, the facilitator identified himself to the force and was subsequently apprehended. Numerous suspected insurgents were also detained for further questioning. The operation was completed with no shots fired.
A combined Afghan and coalition patrol discovered a weapons and drugs cache in Maiwand district, Kandahar province, yesterday. The cache consisted of 10 AK-47 magazines, 300 7.62 mm rounds, six 3 quart (3 liters) jugs filled with liquid opium, 441 pounds (200 kgs) of dry opium and 25 empty drums.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents while conducting a clearing operation in Gelan district, Ghazni province, yesterday.
The operation was conducted to clear a suspected Taliban safe haven in the district that is associated with facilitation activities and cache locations. This area has historically been associated with a Taliban leader who commands several explosive device cells and conducts attacks against coalition forces.
After extensive intelligence gathering, the security force targeted two compounds. The force searched the initial location and after questioning residents, detained one suspected insurgent. At a nearby location, the force isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit. After searching the area and questioning the occupants, the force detained two additional individuals with suspected ties to insurgency. The force ensured the safety of the women and children during both operations.
In Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained one individual with suspected ties to insurgency while searching for a Haqqani network leader during a security operation in Khost district, yesterday. The leader is responsible for the transfer of weapons, ammunition and explosives in the district, and conducts direct attacks against the Afghan National Army and coalition forces.
Based on intelligence tips, the security force searched for the leader at a compound in Khost district. The force secured and cleared the area while ensuring the safety of the women and children. The force searched the area and interviewed residents about the leader’s location. One suspected insurgent was detained based on the information provided by residents. The operation was conducted with no shots fired.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed one insurgent and detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a senior Taliban leader during a security operation in Murghab district, Badghis province, yesterday. The leader is the insurgent provincial commissioner for Badghis. He provides fighters to leaders in the province and leads 10 to 15 fighters in the Bala Murghab area.
The security force targeted a compound in the district based on numerous intelligence tips. While moving into position, the force was engaged by one armed insurgent. The force responded, killing one insurgent. Afterwards, the force continued their search for the leader, isolating the compound and calling for all occupants to exit. After ensuring the safety of the women and children, the force searched the compound and questioned residents about the leader’s location. Subsequent to the interviews, the force detained two suspected insurgents for further questioning.
