KABUL, Afghanistan (May 1, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force killed an insurgent leader during an operation in Nad ‘Ali district, Helmand province, yesterday.

The leader, identified as Sadeq, was involved in planning kidnappings and assassinations of Afghan citizens. He also facilitated the supply of weapons and explosives to other insurgent groups in the area.

During the operation, the security force targeted a compound thought to be associated with Sadeq. After an Afghan-led call out, the force began securing the women and children when Sadeq attempted to evade capture by dressing as a woman. After being discovered, he displayed hostile intent by drawing a gun and attempting to engage the force. The security force killed him in self defense with aimed shots.

North

Afghan and coalition forces discovered a weapons cache during an operation in Pol-e Khumri district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The cache included 125 anti-personnel mines, 80 107mm rockets, 20 55 mm rockets, 200 30 mm anti-aircraft high-explosive rockets, 15 anti-tank mines, more than 100 mortar rounds, rocket-propelled grenades and numerous boxes of ammunition. The partnered-force moved the munitions to a safe location for destruction. No civilians were injured and no property damage was reported.

More than 100 60, 82 and 102 millimeter mortars were destroyed with the combined efforts of U.S. Special Forces, Afghan’s National Directorate of Security, Afghan National Army Special Forces and the Hungarian Explosives Ordinance Disposal team in Pol-e Khumri district, Baghlan province April 30.

South

Afghan and coalition forces detained one insurgent and discovered 530 pounds (240 kilograms) of dry opium during an operation in Nad Ali’ district, Helmand province yesterday, the drugs were destroyed by security forces.

In Tarin Kot district, Uruzgan province, today, Afghan and coalition forces recovered 700 7.62 mm rounds and 300 9 mm rounds.

East

Afghan National Security and Special Operations Task Force – East medics medically evacuated four of the 16 wounded civilians to a nearby medical clinic for treatment of shrapnel wounds after a suicide bomber detonated his vest in the Shkin village bazaar of Paktika province today. Three local civilians were killed in the attack. The remaining injured were treated and continued to be monitored.

Coalition forces killed several insurgents and detained two during operations in Giyan district, Paktika province, today. After coming under attack, coalition forces at Combat Outpost Munoz engaged the armed insurgents, killing several and detaining two. No damage to property or injuries to civilians were reported during this event.

Afghan and coalition forces detained numerous insurgents during a patrol in Khost district, Khost province, yesterday. The combined force also recovered 650 7.62 mm rounds, four AK-47 magazines, 23 30 caliber rounds, 613 303 caliber rounds, 22 5.56 mm rounds, 7 12 mm rounds, one grenade and two tactical vests. All weapons will be destroyed by security forces.
