KABUL, Afghanistan (April 30, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several suspected insurgents during a clearing operation in Shirin Tagab district, Faryab province, yesterday.

The security force targeted the Haji Mashal village to disrupt a known Taliban safe haven in order to prevent improvised explosive device attacks in the district. This area has historically been associated with the senior Taliban official for attacks in the district.

The force cleared several locations and questioned residents about insurgent activity in the area. Based on the information provided by local residents, the force detained several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency.

The force ensured the safety of the civilians while conducting the operation and no shots were fired.

Afghan and coalition forces discovered 902 pounds (409 kilograms) of dry opium in Khash Rod district, Nimroz province, during an operation today.

In Shah Wali Kot district, Kandahar province, today, an Afghan and coalition forces patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of one scanner, 58 electrical detonators, three rolls of detonating cord and 29 receiver and remotes.

In Deh Rawud district, Uruzgan province, today, Afghan and coalition forces discovered 110 pounds (50 kgs) of marijuana during an operation today.

The drugs and IED-making materials were confiscated and destroyed by security forces.
