KABUL, Afghanistan (April 29, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator and several of his associates during a security operation in Zharay district, Kandahar province, yesterday.

The facilitator distributed weapons and supplies to insurgents in his network for attacks.

The security force targeted a compound in the district which intelligence reports indicated was associated with the facilitator. After isolating the compound and calling all occupants to exit, the force commenced their search.

While searching the area, the force discovered more than 225 electric blasting caps which are used to initiate explosives. They also discovered transmitters and receivers used for remote-controlled homemade bombs. All blasting caps were safely destroyed .

Completing the search, the force interviewed residents to identify the facilitator. The force identified and detained the facilitator based on the information provided by residents, and they also detained several suspected insurgents for further questioning. There were no shots fired during the operation.

A combined Afghan and coalition security force detained two suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation in Chahar Bolak district, Balkh province, yesterday. The leader facilitates improvised explosives device operations for attacks against Afghan and coalition forces in the district.

Multiple intelligence tips of suspected insurgent activity in the area led the combined security force to target a compound in the district. The operation began as the force isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit the buildings. The residents complied with the security force’s request, allowing them to ensure the safety of civilians.

The force searched and cleared several buildings, before interviewing local residents. Based on the interviews, two individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency were detained for further questioning.
