KABUL, Afghanistan (April 28, 2011) – A combinedAfghan and coalition security force killed two insurgents and detained numerous others while searching for a Haqqani network leader during a security operation in Ab Band district, Ghazni province, yesterday.



The targeted leader directs attack cells in western Paktika and southeastern Ghazni provinces, leading attacks against Afghan and coalition forces.



Intelligence tips led the security force to a compound in the district to search for the leader. While moving into position, the force came in contact and detained two suspected insurgents for further questioning. As the force continued with the mission they were engaged by two armed insurgents. The force responded to enemy fire, resulting in two insurgents killed.



Continuing their search, the force cleared several locations, detaining numerous additional suspected Haqqani insurgents for further questioning. During the initial altercation, the force discovered an AK-47 assault rifle, pistol and a chest rack.



The force ensured the safety of the women and children during the operation.

In Khost province, a combined Afghan and coalition security force detained several individuals with suspected ties to insurgency while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator during a security operation in Sabari district, yesterday. The facilitator prepares explosive devices used for attacks against the Afghan National Army and coalition forces.



The combined security force targeted a compound in the district base on multiple intelligence reports of insurgent activity in the area. They isolated the area and called for all occupants to exit the buildings. All residents complied with the force’s request, allowing them to ensure the safety of the women and children. During their search the force interviewed residents about the location of the facilitator. Several suspected Haqqani insurgents were detained for further questioning as a result of the interviews.
