KABUL, Afghanistan (April 23, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces, today, confirmed the capture of a Taliban leader detained yesterday.

The leader was responsible for the February 8 Charkh District Bazaar bombing which killed one U.S. soldier and wounded three others. He directed an insurgent cell in the district and was responsible for conducting numerous ambushes against coalition forces.

In other ISAF news through Afghanistan:

North

Afghan and coalition forces killed one insurgent and detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a facilitator during a security operation in Ishkamish district, Takhar province yesterday.

The facilitator and explosives expert supports both Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan and Taliban senior leaders in Ishkamish and Burkah districts. He facilitates the construction and emplacement of improvised explosive devices.

The combined force targeted the facilitator’s suspected compound in the district based on intelligence tips. During initial clearance, an armed insurgent advanced towards the force with a pistol. The force gave several verbal warnings in multiple ethnic languages, but the armed insurgent continued to ignore the warnings. The force then escalated the use of force to warning shots. However, the insurgent continued to ignore the warnings advancing on the force with his weapon drawn in their direction, forcing them to engage him, resulting in one insurgent killed. One pistol was recovered. There were no other injuries.

Completing the mission, the force detained several suspected insurgents. No further shots fired. Women and children were protected throughout the operation.

South

Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban facilitator during a security operation in Kajaki district, Helmand province, yesterday.

The facilitator coordinates the movement of narcotics to Nimroz province and receives weapons shipments. He also directs IED emplacement and ensures Taliban leaders have received IED components for attacks.

Multiple intelligence tips led the combined security force to a compound suspected of insurgent activity in the district. The search commenced with the force isolating the compound and calling for all occupants to exit the buildings. All individuals complied, and the force continued with their search.

After questioning local residents, the force identified several individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency and detained them for further questioning. The force also discovered 400,000 in Pakistan rupees, typically used for drug and weapons transfers.

In Zhari district, Kandahar province, yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces detained one individual while targeting a Taliban leader during a security operation.

The Taliban leader is involved with numerous attacks against Afghan and coalition forces. He assists with coordination and execution of IED attacks, as well as acquires and distributes IED components throughout the district.

Intelligence tips led the combined security force to a compound in the district suspected of Taliban insurgency. The force isolated the compound and called for all occupants to exit the buildings. All occupants were compliant with the callout, which allowed the force to ensure the safety of all women and children. Continuing their search, the force interviewed the local residents of the compound. As a result of the interviews, the force detained an individual with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency.

No shots were fired and no civilians were harmed during the operations.

East

Coalition forces killed two insurgents in Andar district, Ghazni province, yesterday.

The insurgents were observed digging near a road and emplacing an object in a hole, while others set up multiple ambush positions and an observation post with radios and weapons.

After establishing positive identification, close air support assets engaged the insurgents, killing two and causing the remaining to break contact. Coalition forces recovered two AK-47s, one PKM machine gun, one motorcycle and one 40 pound (18 kilograms) pressure plate IED from the site.

In Sayed Abad district, Wardak province, yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces killed one insurgent and detained several suspected insurgents while searching for a Taliban leader during a security operation.

The targeted Taliban leader coordinated operations in the district and maintains close associations with other Taliban leadership in the area.

The combined security force targeted the leader’s suspected compound in Sayed Abad district. During initial clearance, an insurgent armed with an AK-47 assault rifle attempted to fire his weapon at the force. The force responded, killing the insurgent. Continuing the operation, the force secured and cleared several buildings while ensuring the safety of all women and children throughout.

Concluding the operation, the force detained several suspected insurgents for further questioning. During the operation, the force discovered and destroyed grenades, a bomb initiator, and chest racks along with the AK-47. There were no other injuries during the operation and no civilians were harmed.

In Shwak district, Paktiya province, yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces captured a Haqqani facilitator during a security operation.

The facilitator plans attacks against coalition forces and transports and supplies IED materials for other Haqqani insurgents.

After extensive intelligence gathering, the combined security force targeted a compound in Shwak district in search of the facilitator. The force isolated the area, and called for all occupants to exit the buildings. All residents complied with the request, enabling the force to ensure the safety of all women and children. The local residents were interviewed, and as a result, the facilitator was identified. He and one of his associates were detained for further questioning. No shots fired during the operation.

In Baraki Barak district, Logar province, yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces detained two individuals with suspected ties to Taliban insurgency during a clearance operation.

The combined security force conducted the clearance operation to disrupt Taliban activity in Logar. This area is used as a staging area for insurgent attacks.

After extensive intelligence gathering, the force targeted an area with a history of Taliban activity. The force cleared a series of buildings with no shots fired. Continuing their search, the force questioned local residents about knowledge of insurgent activity in the area. Two suspected insurgents were detained for further questioning as result of the interviews. No civilians were harmed during this operation.
