KABUL, Afghanistan (April 17, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition force targeted a Taliban leader, killing numerous insurgents, during a security operation in Sayad district, Sar-e Pul province, yesterday.

The targeted leader is the principle head of all Taliban operations in the province. He has ties to foreign fighter facilitation and suicide training camps operating in the area, and he targets former insurgents who attempt to join the Afghan government’s reintegration process.

Intelligence reports led the security force to a remote area in Sayad suspected of insurgent activity. The security force searched the area and cleared multiple targets. During the search they encountered and engaged multiple armed insurgents, resulting in numerous insurgents killed. One of the insurgents died as a result of self detonating a suicide vest. The security force also discovered multiple rocket-propelled grenades and AK-47s.

Initial reports indicate no civilians were harmed during the operation.

North

An Afghan and coalition force detained an insurgent facilitator insurgent during a security operation in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The facilitator operates concurrently for the Taliban and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan. He provides both group’s leaders situational updates on attacks targeting coalition forces and facilitates bed-down locations for insurgents.

Multiple intelligence sources and local tips led the security force to a compound in the district. After isolating the area, the security force called all occupants to exit the premises peacefully, allowing them to secure the safety of all women and children. The security force conducted their search and interviewed local residents about the location of the facilitator. The facilitator was identified and detained as a result of the interviews. There were no shots fired during the operation.

South

A combined Afghan and coalition force detained two suspected insurgents and destroyed one ton of heroin base while targeting a Taliban leader during a security operation in Washer district, Helmand province, yesterday. The leader operates in the district as the senior leader governing Taliban operations. He helps plan attacks against coalition forces transiting the area, and he facilitates weapons and homemade bomb materials throughout the district. He reports directly to the head of the Taliban Provincial Military Commission for Helmand.

The combined security force went to a compound in Washer after intelligence discovered insurgent activity in the area. The force secured and cleared the area and after interviewing residents, detained two suspected insurgents for further questioning. During the search the security force found one ton of heroin base and 1.3 million Pakistan rupees. The heroin was safely destroyed. There were no shots fired during the operation.

In Kandahar province, a combined Afghan and coalition force captured a Taliban facilitator and several suspected insurgents during a security operation in Panjwa’i district, yesterday. The facilitator is directly involved in the acquisition, construction and operation of explosive dvices and other explosive materials in the district.

The combined security force targeted a compound suspected of insurgent activity. After isolating the compound, an Afghan soldier called all occupants to exit the buildings peacefully. The security force commenced their search and after interviewing residents, the Taliban facilitator identified himself and was detained. Four of his associates were also detained for further questioning. The security ensured the safety of the women and children throughout the operation.
