PHOENIX -- A young Army private severely wounded in Afghanistan is returning to the Valley to a hero's welcome.
Pvt. 1C Joshua Bullis, currently recovering at a military hospital in San Diego, will attend an all-day fund-raiser Friday at the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 2, 12851 N. 19th Ave. Activities run from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be served for $5, $10 and $15.
Bullis, 21, lost both of his legs above the knees and his left arm above the elbow when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan last September.
His father, "Bub" Bullis, and stepmother, Karen Freund-Bullis, are both Phoenix police officers. Joshua was a police cadet before he joined the Army.
Freund says Bullis is taking on major challenges.
"He's up and walking on his legs. He's still going to have to have more practice in walking and there are going to be adjustments and there will probably be adjustments the rest of his life."
While recovering from his injuries, Bullis has dreamed of standing on the tarmac greeting his fellow soldiers as they return from war. That will happen next week.
"After that, I think he realizes he has to start moving forward with his future," Freund said. "Does he go to school, what's he going to do now?"
Freund said Bullis' family has been touched by the interest in his story.
"Everybody is just so interested in seeing how things are going with him and people just keep following his story. You know, they say everybody has his 10 minutes of fame, and I keep thinking his is going to run out. But it just keeps going and going."
