KABUL, Afghanistan (April 15, 2011) – A combined Afghan and coalition patrol repelled an attack on an Afghan National Security Forces checkpoint yesterday in Kandahar City, killing one insurgent.

Two insurgents on a motorcycle attacked the joint checkpoint with small-arms fire in sub-district eight. The combined patrol observed the attack and engaged the insurgents with small-arms fire, causing the motorcycle to crash.

One injured insurgent fled the scene, while the driver of the motorcycle was treated by coalition medical personnel at the scene. The wounded driver was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The patrol cordoned off the area and began a search for the injured passenger, but was unable to determine his whereabouts.

Afghan and coalition forces spotted an individual wearing a suicide vest in Shahid-e-Hasas district, Uruzgan province, today.

The man willingly dropped his suicide vest and surrendered himself when confronted by the combined forces. He claimed he was forced by Taliban leaders to wear the vest and was instructed to target Afghan and coalition forces.

Afghan forces disarmed the device and rendered it safe. After further investigation, the vest was destroyed.

In Sangin district, Helmand province today, a coalition forces patrol discovered nine battery packs, six 15 pound (7 kilograms) jugs of homemade explosives, seven pressure plates and wire. The weapons were destroyed by security forces.

In Delaram district, Nimroz province yesterday, Afghan and coalition forces found 99 pounds (45 kgs) of wet opium, which was destroyed by security forces.
