KABUL, Afghanistan (April 6, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces repelled an insurgent attack and discovered a large narcotics cache in Khash Rod district, Nimroz province, today.

During a clearing operation, a combined security patrol was engaged by several insurgents with small-arms fire and after gaining positive identification, the combined forces returned fire forcing the insurgents to flee. After clearing the enemy area, the combined security patrol found a large narcotics cache consisting of 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of opium, 17 pounds (8 kg) of heroin, multiple precursor chemicals and narcotics paraphernalia. The combined patrol also retrieved one heavy machine gun, one AK-47, one shotgun and three full AK-47 magazines.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

South

In Musa Qal’ah district, Helmand province, during separate clearing operations, two ISAF patrols observed several armed insurgents displaying hostile intent against coalition forces. After establishing positive identification, the ISAF patrols engaged the enemy positions killing the insurgents.

In Nahr-e Saraj district, an Afghan National Army and ISAF patrol was engaged by insurgents. The combined patrol returned fire and called for air support. After gaining positive identification, the air weapons team supporting ground forces engaged them killing two insurgents.

In Kandahar province, during separate clearing operations, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF found several weapons caches in Arghandab district. The caches consisted of one AK-47, multiple anti-personnel mines, hand grenades, multiple automatic weapons, heavy machine guns, individual and belt ammunition for a variety of different weapons systems and several improvised explosive device-making components.

In Chorah district, Uruzgan province, a combined patrol discovered a weapons cache consisting of 1000 7.62 mm rounds, seven rocket-propelled grenade rounds and seven RPG motors.

West

In Shindand district, Herat province a weapons cache was turned into an ISAF base by an Afghan civilian. The cache consisted of 30 mortar rounds and several different types of loose ammunitions.

The drugs, weapons and explosives were confiscated and have been or will be destroyed by the security forces.
