KABUL, Afghanistan (April 2, 2011) – The International Security Assistance Force confirmed that an Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces partnered unit killed a known Taliban suicide attack network leader in Imam Sahib district, Kunduz province, yesterday.
The Known insurgent was directly responsible for the organization and directing of the Feb 21 suicide attack against a district Governors office, killing 29 Afghan civilians, one Afghan police officer, and wounding 36 other Afghan civilians in Emam Saheb City.
The Taliban leader was also an improvised explosive device and suicide vest expert who targeted Afghan civilians and coalition forces. The Taliban leader also coordinated closely with Taliban leadership and attack-coordinators in Wardak and Kabul provinces as well as in Pakistan. His network conducted multiple suicide attacks throughout Kunduz province.
The Taliban leader’s suicide attack network was responsible for Feb 21 and March 10 suicide attacks in Kunduz province against Afghan National Security Forces which resulted in 35 Afghans killed, including the provincial chief of Police and 50 others wounded, including the chief of the Afghan National Army in Imam Sahib district.
Intelligence reports tracked his location to a compound in Imam Sahib district. While moving into position, the joint security forces observed the Taliban leader and another insurgent flee the area to hide in a ditch.
The combined security forces moved to detain the two insurgents. The joint security force maneuvered on the two insurgents, calling them to exit the ditch peacefully. As the joint security force approached, the armed insurgents opened fire with AK-47’s. The security force returned fire, killing the Taliban leader and the other insurgent.

Afghan National Security Forces and coalition forces detained two individuals while in search of a Taliban leader during a security operation in Qosh Tepa district, Jawzjan province, yesterday.
The Taliban insurgent is the head of the Taliban commission for Faryab province, as well as a leader and advisor to the Taliban military commander in the province. He is responsible for multiple IED attacks against Afghan National Security Forces.
Based on intelligence sources, the joint security force targeted a compound in Qosh Tepa district. While moving into position, the security force observed a suspected insurgent fleeing the area. They pursued the suspected insurgent and detained him for further questioning.
The combined security forces then moved to secure the compound. Once the compound was secured, joint security forces cleared the area. After initial questioning, they detained one suspected insurgent for further questioning.
South
Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader during a security operation in Panjway district, Kandahar province, yesterday.
The Taliban leader coordinates operations throughout the province including Arghandab district and Kandahar City. He is also involved in the movement of weapons, IED-making components, and foreign fighters throughout the area, and maintains close connections with other Taliban leaders throughout Kandahar province.
Intelligence reports led the joint security force to a suspected insurgent compound in the district. The security force isolated the area, then called for all occupants to exit the building peacefully.
After ensuring the safety of all women and children, the joint security force secured and cleared the area. Security forces questioned residents on scene, then identified and detained the Taliban leader. The joint security force also found 100 pounds (45 kilograms) of ammonium nitrate and 100 pounds (45 kg) of marijuana, which were safely destroyed on site.
Also in Kandahar province, Afghan and coalition forces captured a Taliban leader during a raid in Kandahar City, yesterday.
The Taliban insurgent is an operational commander linked to a Taliban leader in the Arghandab district. He is responsible for the assassination of a Kandahar district governor in January. The Taliban leader also commands direct action, IEDs and suicide attacks in Kandahar.
Multiple Intelligence reports led the joint security force to a suspected insurgent compound in the district. The joint security force secured and cleared the area, then detained the Taliban leader after initial questioning.
East
In Khost province, Afghan and coalition forces detained one Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin, or HIG, facilitator, one HIG insurgent along with one other suspected insurgent during a security operation in Sabari district, yesterday.
One of the two HIG insurgents detained is involved in the facilitation of grenades, IEDs, and other various explosive materials. He is also responsible for placing IEDs targeting coalition forces.
Based on multiple intelligence sources, the joint security force targeted a suspected HIG compound in the district. Joint security forces isolated the compound before calling all occupants to exit the compound peacefully and ensuring the safety of all women and children.
After initial questioning, joint security forces identified and detained the HIG facilitator along with another highly valued HIG insurgent. The joint security force also detained one additional suspected insurgent for further questioning.
Also in Khost province, Afghan and coalition security forces detained three suspected insurgents while searching for a Haqqani network facilitator in Sabari district, yesterday.
The Haqqani insurgent is responsible for supplying other Haqqani members with communications gear in order to facilitate attacks against Afghan civilians and coalition forces. He also sends reports of coalition activities to various Haqqani insurgents in order to prepare attacks.
Joint security forces targeted a compound in the district based on intelligence tips. After securing and clearing the compound, security forces commenced their search and detained three suspected insurgents for further questioning. The combined forces also confiscated one rifle, one shotgun and ammunition.
In Logar province, Afghan and coalition forces detained four suspected insurgents during a clearing operation in Baraki Barak district, yesterday.
Joints security forces targeted a Taliban safe haven for a clearing operation in order to disrupt Taliban homemade explosives production and weapons caches in the district.
Intelligence reports led the joint security force to a suspected insurgent safe haven. The security force conducted the clearing operation and detained four suspected insurgents for further questioning.
In Zabul province, Afghan and coalition forces detained one suspected insurgent while searching for a Taliban Improvised Explosive Device (IED) facilitator during a security operation in Qalat district, yesterday.
The Taliban IED Facilitator was involved in the kidnapping, robbing and murder of a National Directorate of Security (NDS) agent, as well as coordinating movements of IEDs to other insurgents.
Joint security forces targeted a compound in the area based on intelligence reports. The security force isolated the area, then called for all occupants to exit the building peacefully.
After ensuring the safety of all women and children, the combined forces secured and cleared the area and after questioning residents on scene, detained one suspected insurgent.
During the operations from all the provinces there were no civilians harmed and security forces were careful to ensure the safety of all women and children throughout the searches.
