KABUL, Afghanistan (March 27, 2011) – Afghan National Security and International Security Assistance Forces detained an insurgent weapons facilitator during a clearing operation in Kabul province, yesterday.

The insurgent is responsible for acquiring and supplying munitions and explosives to insurgents in Kabul province.

Two individuals were detained during the operation and were taken by Afghan authorities for further questioning. The combined forces also confiscated one AK-47 during a search of the compound.

In other ISAF news throughout Afghanistan:

North

Afghan and coalition forces detained two persons of interest, including a suspected Taliban senior leader during a presence patrol in Baghlan-e Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday.

The suspect, identified by local villagers, was in possession of numerous munitions, including hand grenades, at the time of detention.

South

In Kandahar province, during two separate clearing operations, Afghan and coalition forces discovered two weapons caches. In Panjwa’i district, combined forces discovered 110 artillery shells of different caliber. In Zharay district, a combined patrol discovered an improvised explosive device production facility, four mines, one 82 mm round packed with explosives, detonation cord and various other IED materials. All weapons were destroyed with a controlled detonation.

In Helmand province, an ISAF observation post spotted several insurgents moving toward a known enemy firing position in Kajaki district. After gaining positive identification, coalition forces engaged the enemy position with mortar fire, killing one insurgent and forcing the others to flee.

In the same province, Reg-e Khan Neshin district, during two separate vehicle check points, coalition forces discovered 400 pounds (181 kilograms) of raw opium, 220 pounds (100 kilograms) of black tar heroin and detained several persons of interest. All drugs will be destroyed by security forces.

East

In Logar province, Afghan soldiers detained a suspected improvised explosive device facilitator.

Prior to his capture, the suspect was seen throwing a package onto a nearby roof, which upon later inspection contained a pistol and bayonet.
