KABUL, Afghanistan (March 27, 2011) –An International Security Assistance Force air weapons team killed more than 10 insurgents in Bermal district, Paktika province today.
The air weapons team observed a large group of insurgents in two different known insurgent observation posts. The insurgents were armed with rocket propelled grenades. The air weapons team engaged both positions killing more than 10 insurgents.

North

An Afghan and coalition security force patrol detained two high-value Taliban leaders in Baghlan-e-Jadid district, Baghlan province, yesterday. The first detained leader is an improvised explosive device expert and is responsible for conducting several attacks against Afghan National Security forces. The second leader is also responsible for the assassination of a Nahrin district governor, and recently returned from Pakistan to assist with attacks in the region targeting Afghan civilians, government officials, and security forces.
Based on intelligence reports, the combined security force targeted a compound in Baghlan-e Jadid district to search for the leaders. The security force secured and cleared the area, detaining the insurgents. Security forces also detained one suspected Taliban insurgent for further questioning. An AK-47, pistol and multiple grenades were found at the site and later destroyed by the security force.





South

An ISAF patrol killed and wounded several insurgents while conducting security operations in Sangin district, Helmand province yesterday. The patrol came under machine gun and small-arms fire and after gaining positive identification of the insurgent position, the coalition forces patrol returned fire, killing several insurgents and wounding several others.
In Zaray district, Kandahar province, Afghan and coalition forces detained several suspected insurgents and found a drug cache, yesterday. The cache consisted of 1,500 pounds (680 kilograms) of marijuana and 350 pounds (159 kgs) of marijuana seeds. During the clearing operation, the combined forces detained several suspected insurgents associated with the drugs, including two IED facilitators responsible for several attacks against Afghan and coalition security forces.
In Shorabak district, Kandahar province, Afghan and coalition forces conducting a dismounted patrol discovered 18,810 pounds (8,530 kgs) of ammonium nitrate yesterday. The chemicals were destroyed on site.




East

An Afghan and coalition security force detained numerous suspected Hezb-E Islami Gulbuddin, or HIG, insurgents, while searching for a HIG facilitator in the Sabari district, Khost province, yesterday. The facilitator is responsible for procuring funds and passing information to insurgent leaders.
The security force targeted a compound in the district based on intelligence reports. The force secured the area before detaining several suspected insurgents, including a high-value HIG target. After initial questioning, citizens notified the security force of the suspected location of another HIG insurgent. The joint force secured the additional location before detaining several suspected HIG insurgents. At another nearby location security forces detained two more insurgents.
In the Mohammed Aghah district, Logar province, an Afghan and coalition security force captured a Taliban facilitator, yesterday. The insurgent is a senior Taliban facilitator operating in the district, and has connections with senior Taliban Leaders throughout Logar province.
Joint security forces were led to an area suspected of insurgent activity in the Muhammad Aghah district based on multiple sources and tips from local citizens. The security force detained the facilitator after interviewing residents of the targeted compound. Security forces also found military uniforms hidden inside a pillow that was sewn shut. No shots were fired and all women and children were protected throughout the search.
Coalition forces conducting a clearing operation in Mehtar Lam district, Laghman province found a weapons cache yesterday. The cache consisted of three 82 mm mortar rounds, eight 57 mm rockets, six containers full of homemade explosives and two Afghan National Army radios.
All weapons, explosives and drugs were confiscated and have been or will be destroyed.
