KABUL, Afghanistan (March 25, 2011) – Afghan National Security Forces and International Security Assistance Forces confirmed the detention of a known insurgent during a combined operation in southern Afghanistan, today.

In Lashkar Gah district, Helmand province, during a detention operation, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF detained an insurgent known to be an improvised explosive device facilitator responsible for several attacks against Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF.

South

In Khash Rod district, Nimroz province, an Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF patrol found a drugs cache consisting of 661 pounds (300 kilograms) of opium and 324 pounds (147 kg) of heroin. The combined forces detained numerous suspected insurgents related to the cache and also confiscated one AK-47, one satellite phone and one vehicle.

In Kandahar province, during separate combined clearing operations, Afghan National Security Forces and ISAF discovered several weapons caches in Zharay and Arghandab districts, today. The caches consisted of 500 7.62 mm rounds, five full AK-47 magazines, six 14.5 mm rounds, four grenades, detonation cord, 23 fuses, seven rocket-propelled grenade warheads, two anti-personnel mines and one 60 mm mortar round.

In a separate clearing operation, an ISAF patrol found a large weapons and IED-making components and explosives cache in Nahr-e Saraj district, Helmand province, today. The cache consisted of 18 RPG warheads, 51 pressure plates, 88 pounds (40 kilograms) of homemade explosives, seven demolition charges, electrical components and wire, one remote detonator, six initiators, eight homemade detonators and loose ammunition of different caliber.

In the same province, a combined patrol found IED-making components and an explosives cache in Garm Ser district consisting of several jugs filled with homemade explosive fragmentation, 65 feet (20 meters) of detonation cord and several pressure plate-making components.

East

In Kabul province, an ISAF patrol discovered a weapons cache in Sarobi district consisting of one AK-47, six full AK-47 magazines, 29 40 mm rounds, IED-making electrical components and wire, 1,312 feet (400 meters) of detonation cord, 11 hand-grenades, one pistol and loose ammunition.

All weapons, explosives and drugs were confiscated and have been or will be destroyed.
